Traditional clothing (folk costume ) is the main factor which has differentiated the culture of Kosovo’s people since the beginning of time. It is also a part of the ethnic domain which overflows with rooted history and spiritual sophistication and breeding. These costumes have gone through modification in different time periods which resulted in the uniqueness of the culture of Kosovo. However, the basic look still resembles the(Illyrian) attire.
- Garments of women and men clothing
The key garments of this particular clothing are “plisi” and “shoka” for men, and “fustanella” or kilts for women. There are around 140 types of Kosovan costumes. These costumes vary from North to South, because of the division of Albanians into ghegs and tosks. The ghegs take up the Northern part of the Albanian region, whereas the tosks take the Southern one. Kosovo is a part of the Northern region, and their costumes vary from the tosks, because of the weather and slightly different culture.
- Regions of the northern part and differences in clothing
In the northern part, Kosovo specifically, the clothing consists of wide-sleeved blouses which are designed with lace embroidery along the edges. Gold coins are also common on women’s headbands and also the strands of necklace that are used for decoration for the upper part of the dress.
Wool is the main textile used for the production of the traditional costumes, along with silk which was used often a century ago. The tailors of these particular costumes were women, who worked on their costumes and their families and also numerous textiles for the chambers of men.
Despite the fact that the traditional clothing are very valuable to the Kosovar culture, due to the modernization of the people they have remained as suits for folk dance performances. However, the cities have been overflowed by a wave of Western countries.
