University of Aveiro is a Portuguese new generation public university, with its headquarters in Aveiro since its 1973 creation. It also provides polytechnic education in three distinct additional poles.

Administratively, the teaching and research activities are distributed by Departments and Autonomous Sections, both with specialized faculty, that may cooperate in any type of activity.

The University has more than 12,500 students distributed across 58 graduation courses, over 40 MSc courses and 25 PhD programs.

Its main campus is near the centre of Aveiro, including a nearby Administration and Accounting Institute of the University of Aveiro, and also having external regional poles in Águeda, Higher Education Technological and Management School of Águeda, and Oliveira de Azeméis, Higher Education School of North Aveiro.

It is a leading R&D university, having a large number of active research units developing programmes targeted at both the international business community and the significant national industry, in fundamental and applied physics, chemistry, telecommunications, robotics, bioinformatics, sea sciences, materials, design, business administration and industrial engineering.

Its graduates become researchers or work for new companies and established ones such as Portugal Telecom, EFACEC, Nokia Siemens Networks, Cisco Systems, Alcatel, Ericsson, Vodafone, BOSCH and NEC.

Ranking

[edit]

It is consistently ranked as one of the best in Portugal, mainly in science, engineering and high-tech, according to recent national and international rankings. In 2009 it was ranked in the 38th position in Europe and 137th position in the world for publications in the area of Engineering (see: http://ranking.heeact.edu.tw/en-us/2009%20by%20Field/Domain/ENG/Country/Portugal), with comparable ranking in 2010, when the Engineering category was divided into different branches.

It is the only Portuguese institution in the ECIU network and the ESDP-Network[citation needed].

It serves as a pole for the MAP inter-university Doctoral program, along with the universities of Porto and Minho.

Its integrated Masters in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering was the first Portuguese IT oriented European Accredited Engineering Masters (EUR-ACE) by the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE).

Its Chemistry Bachelor carries the Chemistry Eurobachelor Label accreditation from the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTNA).

Its research units are involved in several autonomous, industry- or European Commission-funded projects, and NATO has shown interest in funding a project with intercontinental partnerships involving its Centre for Environmental and Sea Studies (CESAM).

The university has a high percentage of foreign students and researchers[citation needed].

In recent years has kept an admission grade above average among several Portuguese Higher Education institutions, even with recent grade inflation problems in the Portuguese National Higher Education Entrance Exams[citation needed].

Participates in post-graduate technical programs jointly with Carnegie Mellon University[1].

In 2009 its Rector was elected a Board Member of the European University Association.

Innovation

[edit]

Hosts in its premises 4 associated laboratories.

In 1994, the top national Internet search engine, SAPO, was created in this university.

Since 1998, the University has been developing an ecological vehicle, Ícaro, aiming to run the largest distance with the smallest amount of consumed fuel, having participated in the international competition Shell Eco Marathon.

Since 2009 it has hosted a SexLab aimed at studying sexual health.

Culture

[edit]

The University hosts "3810-UA", a weekly national public television program, aired to present itself to a broader audience.

In mid-spring a one-week period of break from formal studies is allowed where anyone may participate in academic activities, concerts or Enterro do Ano, a local academic parade.

The University is known for being a regular participant or organizer of robotics inter-universities or inter-schools competitions: Micro-Rato (hardware robotics) and Cyber-Rato (behavioral software). In 2008, one of its teams has won the Robocup world competition, in China.

The animation movie "Até ao Tecto do Mundo", developed at the Communication and Arts Department, has won several prizes including the "Professional Animation Golden Lion Award" and the "Aloha Accolade Award".

The University occasionally organizes mathematics competitions, PmatE, mostly aimed at pre-university level students.

University Campus Santiago

[edit]

The university architecture is modern, with more than 25 buildings.

As an organization, the university is composed of departments, autonomous sections, research units, administrative and service facilities, a library, a mediateque, a field track, a multisports building with gym, a residential complex, green spaces, ecological spots and parking lots. The rectory is located in a white building near the campus centre.

The campus also has an entire Administration and Accounting Institute ISCA-UA, which has its own service facilities and parking lots.
