Ethel De Long Zande

Background

[edit]

Ethel Marguerite de Long was born in October 1879. Her parents both unable to support the family, at age 18, de Long became the main bread-winner. She moved her parents and younger sister Helen to Northampton, Massachusetts, where she attended Smith College and taught at the Easthampton High School.[1] After she graduated in 1901, she worked as a teacher at Central High in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1905, de Long became an English teacher at the Manual Training High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Settlement Schools

[edit]

Upon invitation from Katherine Pettit and May Stone, de Long became principal at the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky, later known as the Hindman Settlement School. "Her spirit leapt at the high adventure, which touched her imagination and promised fulfillment to that humanitarian impulse which from childhood had been so strong in her." [2]

In 1913, de Long and Pettit left Hindman to start their own school, the Pine Mountain Settlement School.

A gifted fundraiser and speaker, de Long often traveled around the country to raise money and garner support for the school. She gave talks at many schools and organizations, including the Chautauqua Institution, Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, Buffalo (NY) Historical Society, Wellesley College Christian Association, Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), Smith College, and the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC.[3]

Personal Life

[edit]

In 1918, de Long married Luigi Zande, an Italian stonemason who worked at the Pine Mountain Settlement School. Zande built a cottage at the school, which later became known as the Zande House. The Zandes had two children, Alberto and Elena.

Death

[edit]

De Long died on March 18, 1928, after a struggle with breast cancer.
