Synopsis
[edit]The synopsis according to IMDB:
"After his career is destroyed, a brilliant but arrogant surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and trains him to defend the world against evil."[4]
Production
[edit]Development
[edit]In 2010, Kevin Feige confirmed there was a treatment of the script in production. By October 2014, it was officially announced at a special event held at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood that Doctor Strange would be apart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 3 line-up.[5]
“The goal is to continue expanding what a comic book movie is, what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is. The comics traverse these dimensions, and film by film, we try to do that in a cinematic way. It’s going to be as satisfying as any movie made, and as weird as any movie we’ve made.”[6]
Many actor's names were thrown around to play the lead. Joaquin Phoenix was the front runner for the longest time, but ultimately the deal fell through.[7][8] On June 4th, 2015 Scott Derrickson tweeted, "My next movie will be STRANGE:", with a photo of a Doctor Strange comic.[9] He was later confirmed to be the official director.[10] In December 2014, it was announced that Benedict Cumberbatch would play the lead role of Doctor Strange.[11] In August 2015, Kevin Feige announced that Tilda Swinton will play Strange's mentor, Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will play the main villain, Baron Mordo.[12] In September 2015, Entertainment Weekly confirmed early rumors that Rachel McAdams will play an important role in the film.[13]
Pre-Production
[edit]At D23 Expo 2015, Kevin Feige showed early concept art of the film. The concept art primarily showed images of Doctor Strange's in action with his gritty looking outfit and iconic goatee. The images have not yet been officially released by Marvel Studios, but many media outlets who were in attendance posted detailed descriptions.
"...a wounded surgeon seeking alternate ways to heal his destroyed hands finds his way to a mystical Eastern sanctuary that leads him to an order that holds the keys to another dimension. [We see] cars levitated into the air; buildings turning over Inception-style, Benedict Cumberbatch in the red cape. Tilda and Chiewetel in costume, bizarre otherworldly dimensions. Insane colors. No creatures, alas. But there will be. Final shot of [concept art shows]: Strange [with gray temples] doing energy blasts from his hands..."[14]
