1.1 The Gym System
Purpose
Gyms exist so that players may obtain free Pokécoins to make in-app purchases from the game store and Stardust to enhance gameplay.
A maximum of 100 free Pokécoins can be collected every 21 hours. Every Pokémon that a player has in a gym grants the player 10 free Pokécoins upon collection. If a player has over 10 Pokémon in gyms at the time they press the collection button, they will only receive the maximum of 100 Pokécoins.
In addition to free Pokécoins, players also receive 500 stardust per gym (up to maximum of 5,000 stardust per collection). Stardust is a valuable resource that allows trainers to power-up their Pokémon.
The collection button is located on the top right-hand side of the store page and will indicate both the remaining time left until a player’s next available collection time and the number of gyms that a player currently has Pokémon sitting in (up to a maximum of 10).
Locations
PokémonGo gyms are typically located at places of historic meaning. Oftentimes at churches, memorials, graveyards, birth places, city halls, train stations, Starbucks locations and etc.

Every time a gym levels up, a spot opens in the gym, thus allowing a maximum of 10 Pokémon to sit at each gym location (one spot per level). When Pokémon are placed in a gym, their CP will determine their position in the gym – the higher the CP, the higher the Pokémon’s position. When players train/battle against gyms, they will encounter all Pokémon sitting in the gym one at a time starting with the lowest CP Pokémon until they reach the last Pokémon (which will be the Pokémon in the gym with the highest CP).
Gym Appearance on the Map
Gyms can only be four distinct colors:
Blue – Occurs when the gym has been claimed by Pokémon belonging to Team Mystic players
Red – Occurs when the gym has been claimed by Pokémon belonging to Team Valor players
Yellow – Occurs when the gym has been claimed by Pokémon belonging to Team Instinct players
White – Occurs when the gym has been not been claimed
If a gym is being attacked/trained, players will see a battle animation on top of the gym
Gym Mechanics
Once a trainer walks their avatar into the range of a gym, there are three possible course of actions a player may take:
1. Add a Pokémon – this action can either be taken when the gym is empty (level 0), or if there is an open spot in the gym (gym occupancy is indicated by black/white circles under a gym’s name: black meaning that there is a spot, white meaning that the spot is full.
2. Build up the gym via Prestiging against allied Pokémon
3. Destroy the gym via Battling against enemy Pokémon
General Info
Before initiating a gym battle, players must preselect a party of 6 Pokémon. The Pokémon placed in the top left-hand slot will be the first to battle.
Battles end once all Pokémon in the gym have been defeated, or if the attacker’s whole party is wiped out, or if the player hits the “run” button if they no longer wish to fight.
Attackers must defeat the defending Pokémon within 90 seconds, or else they will lose the battle.
Prestiging and destruction can happen simultaneously.
Prestiging Allied Gyms
Allied Pokémon are Pokémon that belong to the attacker and their teammates. Prestiging can only be accomplished individually.
Prestiging against allied Pokémon will add 100-1000 Prestige to a gym.
If the CP of the strongest Pokémon in a player’s party is higher than that of a Pokémon they defeat, there will be a gain 100 prestige if the attacking party’s maximum CP is double (or higher) than that of the defeated Pokémon; if the attacking party’s maximum CP is less than double, but still higher than the defeated Pokémon, then there will be a scaling gain of 101-499 CP depending on the difference.
If the CP of the strongest Pokémon in a player’s party is equal to that of a Pokémon they defeat, then exactly 500 prestige will be added to the gym.
If the CP of the strongest Pokémon in a player’s party is less than that of a Pokémon they defeat, there will be a maximum gain of 1000 prestige if the attacking party’s strongest Pokémon’s CP doesn’t exceed half of that of the defeated Pokémon’s CP. If the attacking party’s strongest Pokémon’s CP does exceed half but isn’t greater than that of the defeated Pokémon’s, then there will be a scaling gain of 501-999 Prestige depending on the difference.
Prestigers gain 10 XP for every 1000 Prestige that they add to a gym.
Destroying Enemy Gyms
This can be done solo, but it can also be done in groups. There is no limit to the number of attackers fighting a gym at once. There is also no restriction as to who can join the fight as long as the attackers are not on the same team as the Pokémon in the gym. Soloing a gym level 10 gym alone can typically take 60-90minutes, whereas fighting in a group drastically reduces that time.
For every defending Pokémon defeated, the gym loses 1000 CP until it reaches 0.
When a gym loses a level, the defending Pokémon with the lowest CP is returned to their owner.
Once a gym reaches level 0, a new gym can be built up when the attacker places a Pokémon into the white gym.
Attackers gain 100 XP for every Pokémon they defeat.
Frequently Used Gym Terms
Bubbling – Placing a low CP (often 20-40) defender at the bottom of a gym, and fighting against just that one Pokémon with an attacking party that has less than half the defender’s CP. These battles usually last 3-6 seconds (really quick) and reward the attacker with 1000 prestige.
Cycling/Shaving – When a player kicks out a defender by attacking an allied gym in order to place their own Pokémon into a typically full level 10 gym.
Spoofer – A player who uses a third party program to trick their phone’s GPS into thinking that they are at the desired location even though in reality they may be at home and nowhere near that area.
