Career

[edit]

Early Years

[edit]

Ago Teppand, professionally known as Jéja, began his music career in 2011 as a producer, songwriter, and mixing engineer. During this period, he primarily worked with local Estonian and Finnish artists. [4] [5] [6] His early influences spanned a wide variety of genres, enabling him to work with a diverse array of artists.

Production and Songwriting for Other Artists

[edit]

In 2014, Jéja collaborated with The Used on their album Imaginary Enemy, contributing engineering, mixing, and programming for the entire album. [7] The album peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200. [8]

Later that year, his work was featured on most of the tracks from 5 Seconds of Summer's self-titled debut album, which topped the Billboard 200 chart. [9] He contributed additional production and programming to tracks like "Good Girls" and "Voodoo Doll," which have over 115 million and 76 million streams on Spotify, respectively. [10] [11]

In 2015, Jéja continued working with them on their second album, Sounds Good Feels Good, which also reached number one on the Billboard 200. [9] [12] Notable tracks he worked on include "Vapor" and "Waste the Night," which have accumulated over 47 million and 34 million streams on Spotify, respectively. [13]

He worked on Sleeping with Sirens' album Madness (2015), handling additional production and programming for tracks like "Kick Me," "Fly," and "November." [14] The album reached number 13 on the Billboard 200. [15] "Kick Me" alone has over 74 million streams on Spotify.

Jéja also contributed to Trey Songz's "Loving You" featuring Ty Dolla $ign from the album Trigga Reloaded (2015), which contains an interpolation from his earlier work "Tigerhead" with Iiris. [16] This album also reached number 1 on the Billboard 200. [17]

Jéja co-wrote "Beautiful Pain" for Andy Black's album The Shadow Side (2016), which peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200. [18] He also contributed drums to the track "Break Your Halo" from the same album, collaborating with 5 Seconds of Summer's drummer, Ashton Irwin. [19]

The Breakthrough and Evolution of Jéja

[edit]

Jéja gained significant recognition as an artist through his collaboration with the Estonian electronic music group Cartoon, of which he was a founding member. In 2015, they released "Why We Lose" featuring Coleman Trapp, which garnered over 124 million streams on Spotify and 231 million views on YouTube. [20][21]

They followed up with "On & On" featuring Daniel Levi under NoCopyrightSounds, which became a massive hit. [1] It was certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in July 2023 and Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in September 2023. [22] [3]

Other notable releases include "I Remember U" featuring the Estonian Idol winner Jüri Pootsmann (2016) with over 22 million streams on Spotify, and "C U Again" featuring Mikk Mäe (2016) with over 45 million streams. [23] [24]

In 2020, they released "Howling" featuring Asena, amassing over 28 million streams on Spotify and 11 million views on YouTube.[25][26] The Andromedik Remix of "Howling" also gained popularity, with 15 million streams on Spotify and 11 million views on YouTube. [27] [28]

Cartoon disbanded in 2017, but the band resumed activities in 2020. In early 2024, Ago Teppand would leave the project to focus on a solo career under his moniker Jéja.

In 2019, he co-wrote Nublu's "Mina Ka," and in 2020, he co-produced, mixed and mastered "Für Oksana" for the Estonian rapper; both songs won Song of the Year at the Estonian Music Awards in their respective years. [31] [32] [33] [34]
