Background
[edit]On August 4, 2019, Shuttle would reveal via his Snapchat he had started working on his next studio album. On February 2, 2019, Shuttle announced on his Twitter account that he would be revealing the title and cover for his new album at the time. While going on the road, Shuttle had been tweeting on what the title is to the album on Twitter. In an interview with Billboard, Shuttle explained the meaning of his album title: "I named the album Arizona because I love it so much there. It's really amazing and I just want to put it to music. With the album and the tour I just want everyone to have that feeling, that they're there with me."
Recording and Production
[edit]Recording for the album took place between 2018 and 2019, with Shuttle posting updates through social media and eventually the Arizona Documentary. Shuttle started his album by naming fourteen locations in Arizona. Some alternate names that did not appear on the album are "Apache Junction", "Monument Valley", "Surprise", "Flagstaff", "Rio Verde" and "Tombstone".
The first songs "Flying In", "Flying Out", "Fountain Hills" and "Troon North" were all recorded in the fall of 2018. "Fountain Hills" was originally supposed to be titled "Troon North", however Shuttle misnamed the song. Shuttle took heavy inspiration from Travis Scott's sophomore album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, saying "Birds by Travis, is like my favorite trap album ever created. So this is my version, of my perfect trap album."
In the winter of 2018 "Mesa", "Phoenix", "Cave Creek" and "Scottsdale" were recorded, along with alternative versions of "Grand Canyon", "Sun City" and "Tuscan", which did not make it onto the final album.
In January and February of 2019, Shuttle felt uninspired with the beats that he was receiving and making.
In spring of 2019, Shuttle recored a few throw away songs from the album and ended up making "Tuscan". The original version of "Tempe" was also written and recorded in a hotel room in Los Angeles, in April, 2019. The final version of "Phoenix" was recorded in spring and was supposed to feature a full verse from fellow rapper Lil Puff, however Puff only had the time to record half of the verse.
Promotion and Release
[edit]In August of 2018, Shuttle would release the song "Pagani" on all streaming services. The song was produced by American producer Sumeek. The song peaked at 33 on the Billboard Hot 100. On May 22, 2019, the single was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
