Goldsea (goldsea.com) is an Asian American website founded in October 1998.[1] It features profiles of Asian American achievers and Pacific Rim news stories from an Asian American perspective.[2] It is notable as the leading Asian American site featuring professionally-written content as opposed to dating sites, forums or other user-generated content. [3] It is also notable as a repository of profiles of America's most successful individuals.[4] It is the Number 1 ranked site in its category, according to Ranking.com.[5]
History
[edit]Goldsea was founded in October of 1998 by Korean American Tom Kagy who had also founded AsiAm, the first national Asian American magazine in 1986.[6][7] AsiAm was retitled Transpacific in December of 1990.[8] Kagy's original motivation for starting an Asian American magazine was the need he felt while growing up for positive Asian role models in a predominantly caucasian media world. [9] Kagy also founded Face, the Asian American women's beauty and fashion magazine in November of 1991.[10] [11]
Content
[edit]Personality Profiles
[edit]The sheer number of Goldsea's profiles of Asian Americans who have achieved success or notability has made it the most cited Asian American site for references relating to notable Asian Americans, with far in excess of 500 external links to the site catalogued by Wikipedia. [12] They include the likes of Commerce Secretary and former Washington state Governor Gary Locke[13], actor Joan Chen[14], Energy Secretary and Nobel laureate Steven Chu[15], actor Jason Scott Lee[16], Right-wing Columnist Michelle Malkin[17] and silent-film-era Hollywood star Sessue Hayakawa[18].
Goldsea also features extensive compilations of Asian American achievers by category. They include The 120 Most Inspiring Asian Americans of All Times, [19], Notable Asian American Professionals[20], Asian American Corporate Superstars[21], 12 Most Brilliant Asian Americans[22], Greatest Asian American War Heroes[23] and 100 Most Successful Asian American Entrepreneurs [24], among many others.
Asian American Experience, Identity and Perspective
[edit]In keeping with its original mission of addressing the issue of Asian American identity, Goldsea features three channels focused on aspects of the Asian American identity[25], experience[26] and perspective[27].
The tone and substance of the topics addressed can be gleaned from titles like Evolution of an Asian American[28], Asian American Man to Man[29], Identity, the Ultimate Luxury[30], Brotherly Advice for Asian Women[31], Big American Misconceptions about Asians[32] and Spotting Nouvelle Racism [33].
A special channel devoted to Asian American parenting focuses on ways to offset the effects of stereotyping during a child's formative years to inculcate a positive self-image and sense of identity.[34].
Culture and Lifestyle
[edit]Goldsea also makes an effort to present aids to help access and evaluate the various forms of Asian culture available to Asian Americans with features like Great Asian Malls and Supermarkets[35], 100 Favorite Asian American People, Places and Things[36] and Great Asian-Friendly Movies[37].
Pacific Rim News and Trends
[edit]Some evolution in Goldsea's focus toward an older professional audience is apparent in the increased share of the home page devoted to coverage of current Pacific Rim news and trends. The site's subtitle appears to have changed from Asian American Supersite to Asian American Daily. On any given day the majority of new items linked to the home page are current news items while articles dealing with personalities and identity issues are relegated primarily to the far right-hand column and the "Perspectives" section on the lower center portion[38]. Goldsea has also added an Asian American video section featuring videos that are typically linked to Asian entertainers, actors, athletes or events in the news[39]
