The Netherlands A cricket team is a cricket team representing Netherlands, and is the second tier of international Dutch cricket below the full Netherlands national cricket team. The team played its first game, against the full India A side, in Abu Dhabi in April 2006.[1]
History
[edit]The Netherlands A team was originally formed ahead of the 2006 EurAsia Cricket Series, which was competed by three A teams from Test-playing nations, two A teams from One Day International-playing nations, and the hosting nation UAE. However, there was earlier a confusion among the Dutch selectors and officials whether tournament organisers would be willing to accept the presence of a Dutch A side. Later, confirming the participation of Dutch A side in the tournament, the Dutch director of youth cricket, Roland Lefebvre, who has been co-ordinating the effort to organise the team stated, "It's a great chance to give younger players who are on the fringe of the national side experience of big matches under difficult conditions."[2] Four days later, on 10 April 2006, the Royal Dutch Cricket Association named a 14-man squad for the series, with Jeroen Smits named as the captain. As most of the senior players were unable to take part in the tournament, the KNCB development strategy announced the squad members focussing on the 2009 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.[3]
