Evaluate an article
[edit]- Name of article:Environmental justice
- I chose this article to evaluate because it is a high-importance article as well as being something that is a very popular topic now in conversation and even in the classroom. This high-importance means this article has been used for wiki education projects and is a good example of what an article should be.
Lead
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic? It does have an opening sentence but it does not describe what the subject is about until a couple sentences after.
- Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections? Yes the section breaks down the brief sections but uses different names for the sections
- Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article? No the lead is very straight forward and outlines what will be covered.
- Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed? The lead is potentially too concise, but outlines the topic well.
Lead evaluation:
[edit]A really good lead. It is short and concise and references the article sections that will be included about the topic. Does not overwhelm the reader.
Content
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Is the article's content relevant to the topic? Yes the content within the article is related to the title of the article however it may have been too much information that made the article overwhelming.
- Is the content up-to-date? I don't think any information is out of date however I think more present examples can be inputed
- Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong? I think something the article could improve on is clearly outlining examples of activists groups that have assisted with this topic
Content evaluation
[edit]Overall, the content is very resourceful and clearly outlines what environmental justice is and where it takes place. The improvement of examples will probably just take time as so many new actions are occurring currently.
Tone and Balance
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Is the article neutral? The tone does seems very neutral with the article never coming out and supporting one thing instead it is more of a pro and con outline of the subject
- Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position? There were not any heavily biased claims as everything was supported and backed by reliable sources.
- Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented? I think the viewpoint of the minority groups that are being underrepresented could be highlighted more in the article.
- Does the article attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or away from another? I don't think so, but they do outline the many ways environmental justice is needed and how/where it takes place making a very good argument to support it.
Tone and balance evaluation
[edit]Overall the tone seemed very neutral and outlined what environmental justice is and what people say out the subject. Showed both sides very well.

[edit]- Guiding questions
- Are all facts in the article backed up by a reliable secondary source of information? All facts are backed up by multiple sources and reference many government sources.
- Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic? They slightly reflect the literature available but it also incorporates online sources as well.
- Are the sources current? Yes most are very up to date especially since this is a modern topic.

Sources and references evaluation
[edit]The sources seem very unbiased and centered around facts and lived experiences.

- Does the article have any grammatical or spelling errors? I did not see any errors when reading the article.
- Is the article well-organized - i.e. broken down into sections that reflect the major points of the topic? The sections do help organize the information however I think they could have added an activist section or more clearly outlined that in the page.
Organization evaluation
[edit]Overall very organized especially for the amount of information the page has.

Checking the talk page
[edit]- Guiding questions
- What kinds of conversations, if any, are going on behind the scenes about how to represent this topic? The main conversation occurring is how to organize the article because there is so much information. It shows how to decide what stays in the article and what branches out to its own article.
- How is the article rated? Is it a part of any WikiProjects? It is rated C-class, High-importance and was apart of several wiki education projects
- How does the way Wikipedia discusses this topic differ from the way we've talked about it in class? Environmental justice can be a very passionate issue. While in class discussion seemed to surround the now and focused on specifically the youth of this movement, the article focuses on the government and policy aspect of this issue which may get lost

[edit]Overall this talk page is less about section improvements and more about organization of the large amount of information.
