Landon's Early Life

Susan M. Landon was a petroleum geologist, and was involved in the natural gas exploration in the Rocky mountains. Landon was from Matton, Illinois, United States. Her career began in Denver as an exploration training manager. Landon once said in an interview, “My only advice to a woman who is interested in petroleum geology is that there are tremendous opportunities.” Landon enjoyed her career and said in an interview that her career was flexible enough to allow her to incorporate her hobbies such as mountain climbing, skiing and travelling with her husband, an astronomer. On February 22nd 2005, Landon was skiing at the Copper Mountain and suffered a terrible fall, hitting her head. She was taken to St. Anthony’s hospital and the doctors diagnosed her with severe internal bleeding, broken pelvis and humerus, and a subdural hematoma on the right side of her brain.

Education and Career

Landon went to Galesburg, Illinois to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree at Knox College . She also went to Binghamton to achieve her Master of Arts in Geology from University of New York. In 1974, she began her career by becoming a part of Amoco Production Company which is located in Denver, Colorado as a role of an exploration geologist. In 1987, she got involved in Amoco’s project to drill a test in central Iowa to research the Precambrian Mid-continent Rift. Soon that year-quitting her job at Amoco, she went to Houston, Texas for her new job titled as Manager of Exploration Training. After Amoco she set out to Denver in 1990 to be an independent geologist in order to accomplish her career.   Landon has held a position of a  treasurer in a union like American Association of Petroleum Geologists and furthering as a president in the American Institute of Professional Geologists.

 She is involved in partnership with other geologists and geophysicists who are exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States.  Her team works on ideas based on the region they believe to have potential and partners  with oil and gas companies for drilling and investigation. Being a petroleum geologist she applies geologic principles to oil and gas exploration. She works on fields or areas that have not been explored. Also where no or few hydrocarbons have been discovered.  She has done research on the Gulf of Suez and North Sea regarding hydrocarbons and also the rift basin located in the centre of North America.

Achievements

Throughout Landon’s career as a geologist, she has encountered stupefying amounts of milestones over a short period of time. In 1975, Landon became a member of AAPG (American Association Of Petroleum Geologists), then became a Certified Petroleum Geologist. Landon advanced more within her career with Amoco Production, she became an exploration training manager in Houston. Later on in 1990, Landon sought independence and became a consultant in Denver. Since 1995, Landon became a member of the House of Delegates, serving terms in 1979-1982 (RMAG) and 1988-1993 in Houston. Landon also served on the Group Insurance Committee in 1994 and served as vice chair in 2000-2001.

In 1985-1986, Landon was a member of the Select Committee on the Future of Petroleum Geologists, also was on the AAPG Advisory Council, from 1991-1992, later on became elected as AAPG’s treasurer from 1994-1996. In 1994, Landon published numerous articles such as AAPG Memoir 59, as an editor, Interior Rift Basins, and a course in petroleum geology for non-technical individuals for AAPG. Landon was chairman of the Committee on Earth Resources at the National Research Council, and served the Colorado Geological Survey Advisory Committee from 1992-1997.

Awards

Susan Landon is renowned for editing the book, ‘’Interior Rift Basins,’’ in the geology and scientific  community. Susan has been trailblazing as an independent consultant in the petroleum geology industry. As a geologist she had made a significant impact in the western hemisphere. Between 1970’s and the late 1980’s she was part of major development in the geology industry in the United States and the Rocky Mountains to name a few. She has taught throughout the United States as she was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, American Institute of Professional Geologists and American Geological Institute.

She was elected during 1994-1996 for American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Susan received a BA in Geology from Illinois and MA in New York.

Additional Information

Susan throughout her life has been very active in the scientific community and advancement. In the time period of 1992 to 1997, at the National Resource Council she was elected the chairman for the Committee on Earth Resources. In addition she served at the Colorado Geology Survey during the time period.

After Amoco, she taught Petroleum geology to engineers around the world, like south America and the USA.

Susan is now involved in a partnership with many other geologists.

She is very energetic about oil and gas and teaches others about industry courses.

Susan loves to travel and hike with her husband during her free time.
