Outapi

[edit]

Uutapi, also known as Outapi and Ombalantu, is a town in northern Namibia near the border with Angola situated 90km south of Oshakati. It is the capital of Omusati region and the district capital of the Outapi electoral constituency.

Within the former South African Army base is the famous Omukwa (Baobab tree) tree, whose huge hollow trunk has been used in the past as a post office, a chapel and a coffee shop, and is now a craft shop. Uutapi is developing rapidly. There is a large number of newly constructed government buildings and shops in the south of the town. The language spoken there is Oshiwambo. Outapi is one of the hottest place in the northern Namibia with temperatures ranging between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Outapi features several schools, a community hall, a hospital and a police station. There are two open markets, one at the baobab tree and one at Onhimbu location. There is also a tourist lodge.

The pace of urban expansion in Namibia like in many other developing countries represents a major and permanent demographic shift in the population from rural to the city dwellers. Outapi Town’s growth in urban residents is taking place at a fast rate, understandably accompanied by development. The topography of the Outapi area is characterized by an extremely flat area with a massive baobab, palm and marula trees.

Outapi was declared as a town in 1997 and was proclaimed in 1998 as a capital and administrative centre of Omusati region. Even before independence in 1990, it has been a growing centre with a secondary school, a hospital, few numbers of shops and a couple of cuccashops. It is located on the main road of Oshakati/Ruacana (C46) with another road connecting Outapi-Tsandi and Okahao respectively, thus has become the commercial and administrative hub for the whole region.
