Etrius James Beckett (born Harry James Potter; 31 July 1980), known also by names of "The Boy Who Lived," "The Great Lion," and "The Whistleblower," is a Britannic Politician, the leader of the Invictus Party, and Lord Marshal of the Empire of Britannia. He previously served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2010, until the abolishment of Her Majesty’s Government and institution of the Imperial Congress in 2013. As the original whistle-blower of the Magical Community, Beckett caused the Panics of 2013, and is widely believed to have engineered this event to attain further political power, solidifying his position as a dictator. Though his regime is autocratic, it has been marked with a lack of scandal, corruption, and tyranny. This, combined with his general acceptance of provincial self-governance and Quasi-Parliamentary Law, has caused his reign to be termed as a "Father Knows Best" Government.
Beckett was born in the town of Godric’s Hollow, Cornwall, to James and Lily Potter. After attending the Scottish Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (now known as the British Institute for the Study of Magical Arts) he pursued a career in the British military. He was decorated with the Victoria Cross due to his service in the Second Beneluxian War, and ultimately achieved the rank of Brigadier, before retiring from active service. Returning home, he joined the British Victory Front, and became its leader in the following year, reforming it into the Invictus Party in 2008. With pro-war sentiment strong in Britain after the loss of the war, Beckett gained popular support by attacking the weakness of British military command, the Treaty of Calais, and promoting a united British state with charismatic oration. Beckett frequently denounced the restriction of monarchical power in Britain and the League of Boulogne as part of an anti-British conspiracy.
In 2010, the Invictus Party won the UK General Election, becoming the first party to win a General Election outside of Labour or Conservative (or a coalition) since 1918, and leading to Beckett’s appointment as Prime Minister on the 11th of May 2010. The first two years of his premiership focused on military reform and economic reconstruction from the war, using the motto of “Iron and Sweat” to rally popular support. This led to a rapid reindustrialisation, economic recovery and technological growth, referred to since as “The Second Industrial Revolution”. Going on to construct a Pan-Celtic Platform, Beckett pushed for the reunification of Britain and Ireland, disregarding the Treaty of Calais. Threat of international intervention caused him to postpone these plans until 2014.
On December 12th 2012, Beckett exposed the Magical society to the rest of the world, causing the Panics of 2013. Despite some fierce opposition from anti-magical elements within the Government, Beckett secured his position as the Prime Minister. After the May 24th Terror Attacks on London which resulted in the deaths of much of the Royal Family and the destruction of Buckingham Palace, Beckett declared emergency powers under the Emergency Realm Act, merging the roles of Prime Minister and Head of State (though only temporarily officially), and transforming the United Kingdom into the Empire of Britannia, a one-party dictatorship. Propaganda of Beckett’s defeat of the domestic terrorist Tom Marvolo Riddle (known also as Lord Voldemort) began to circulate. As popular opinion of both Beckett and his administration swelled he enacted, unopposed, the Protection of the State Act. This made the merger of Head of State and Prime Minister permanent, creating a new office for Beckett: the autocratic position of Lord Marshal. Beckett supported a tolerant acceptance of the magical community of Britain, aiming to unify all elements of the British Isles, and continued pushing for Pan-Celtic Unity. The first 5 years of his power marked a decay of relations with Belgium and France (the main members of the League of Boulogne), intense military rearmament and reform and the integration of Ireland and the Netherlands into the Empire – actions that further consolidated his popular appeal.
Beckett’s policy of Pan-Celtic unity aggravated French contemporaries, as his realm of influence expanded to include the Brittany region of Northern France. This aggressive foreign policy is slated to be the primary cause of the outbreak of the War of Boulogne in 2018. A surprise large scale invasion of Brittany began with Operation Longshot on the 8th of August, resulting in declarations of war from France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Invading forces from Holland took Belgium and Luxembourg by October and joined with the main front against the French in November. On the 15th of December Paris was occupied by Britannic forces, with the Government of France formally surrendering the following day. In response, the south-west regions of France broke off under the name of the Republic of Occitania, and declared war against Britannia. As of August 2019, the border between the two nations continues to have intermittent skirmishes, though neither have indicated any desire to commit to any significant campaign against the other.
Under Beckett’s leadership the Invictus regime has reunified the British Isles, made Britannia into an industrial, economic, and technological powerhouse, and successfully reformed its military into the second most powerful in the world, partly through its integration of magical citizens in “Arcane Brigades,” though it's main military force remains one of the most well-trained and well-equipped regardless. Such popular appeal has left many to refer to him by a new moniker: "The Great Lion." Despite this popularity at home, his aggressive foreign policy and alleged war crimes in the War of Boulogne have garnered extreme levels of international enmity, and have been formally condemned by both Russian President Vadim Astakhov and German Chancellor Karl Breiner. A lack of condemnation from US President Stephen K. Baum has led to speculation that US-Britannic relations have been a secret priority of Beckett’s.
