The third season of The Masked Singer Australia was renewed in October 2020[3] and premiered on Monday, 13 September 2021.[4][5][6] Osher Günsberg returned as the show's host.[7][8] In the Grand Finale on 03 October 2021, Rita Ora was revealed as the winner and Anthony Callea was the runner-up.[9]
Production
[edit]The costumes were designed and created by Australian Academy Award and BAFTA Award-Winning costume designer Tim Chappel, who is best known for his work on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert with Lizzy Gardiner.[10]
The third series will begin filming with a virtual audience on 3 July 2021 and will premiere on 13 September, 2021.[11][12]
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
[edit]As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the announcement of lockdown restrictions in Greater Sydney, it was announced that the in studio audience would again consist of socially-distanced production staff wearing costumes, like the previous season.[12] Additionally, 100 Australian viewers were selected to act as a virtual audience. The virtual audience streamed the live performances online while the show is produced and voted for their favourite character's performances. The performer with the fewest votes by the virtual audience was unmasked in each episode. For confidentiality, the virtual audience did not witness the elimination's result or the unmasking of the performers.[12]
Panellists and host
[edit]Radio personality Jackie O, singer-songwriter Dannii Minogue and comedians Dave Hughes and Urzila Carlson will return to the judging panel from the previous season.[13] Osher Günsberg will return to host the show.[11][13]
Contestants
[edit]In the third season, there were twelve contestants who competed in the competition.[13] On 17 June 2021, Network Ten announced the stage identities of the first six masks.[14] The Mullet and Piñata were announced on 10 August 2021 in the first trailer.[15] On 24 August 2021, the final four masks were announced in the second trailer.[16]
