East Germany's national footbaal ahead of it's final international fixtures against Belgium on 12 September 1990.
East Germany's national footbaal met it's Western counterpart only once during the 1974 FIFA World Cup. East Germany won 1–0.

The East Germany national football team represented East Germany in international association football and was governed by the Football Association of East Germany (DFV). Following the end of World War II and most of the than Germany, football quickly again became one of the most popular sports. After four years of seperation, two new German states were founded–The Federal Republic of Germany (FDR; West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR; East Germany). During its existance, the GDR football team played a total of 293 matches, winning 193 fixtures.

East Germany's first international fixture was on 21 September 1952 in Warsaw, where they lost 3–0 against Poland. The following match, Karl Schnieke [de] scored the country's first international goal, in Bucharest against Romania. In September 1956, East Germany played and won it's first fixture against a non-Eastern Bloc team. It met Indonesia national football team on 19 September in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz), winning 3–1. East Germany's first international event was the 1958 FIFA World Cup qualification. Being drawn into UEFA Group 4, the country had to face of Wales and Czechoslovakia twice. East Germany won their first match 2–1 against Wales, but lost the remaining matches.

The East German team met its counter-part West Germany on a single occassion in the final match of the 1974 FIFA World Cup Group 1, winning 1–0.

Background

[edit]

Germany played its 198th and final match as a unified country on 22 November 1942 against Slovakia, winning 5–2, before international fixtures were abolished due to World War II. Following the end of World War II, Germany was split into four occupation zones. The three zones controlled by the Western Bloc (United States, United Kingdom, France) formed The Federal Republic of Germany (FDR; West Germany) on 23 May 1949. The zone controlled by the Soviet Union was established on 7 October 1949.

Western Germany played its first post-war international fixture against Switzerland on 22 November 1950 in Stuttgart, winning 1–0. Germany's football association became a FIFA member in 1904 and joined UEFA in 1954. West Germany was seen as the legal sucessor of the German Empire and Nazi Germany, therefore inheriting it's stats. In 1952, the Deutscher Sportausschuß [de] (1948–1957) joined FIFA and was one of the founding member of UEFA two years later.
