Pelé in 2011

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, commently refered to as Pelé (1940–2022) was a Brazilian forward who scored his first international goal at his debut against Argentina in the 1957 edition of the Roca Cup.[1] Having scored 77 goals in 92 appearances, Pelé is, as of April 2022, Brazils all-time record goal scorer. Pelé is ranked tenth on the all-time list of international goal scorers.

Pelé has participated in six major international tournaments: four FIFA World Cups (1958, 1962, 1966, 1970) and two Copa Américas (1959 in Argentina and later in the year in Ecuador). He played a total of fourteen matches in World Cups, scoring a total of twelve goals, making him the fifth most successful World Cup player and Brazil's second best-scorer in the tournament, behind Ronaldo (15).[2] Furthermore, Pelé has held the record of most World Cup wins since 1970, winning three tournaments (1958, 1962, 1970) and scoring in both the 1958 and 1970 final.[3]

Pelé remains Brazil's youngest international scorer and has held the record of youngest FIFA World Cup scorer since the June 1958 match against Sweden.[4]
