Workshop: Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

Nice start on the article. It's very organized and detailed. However, I felt putting a subtopic for "Threatened Again" is a little unnecessary, compared with what you had above it. Good section on "Other Factoids"! But the first bullet point could have gone at the very top, with your first description of the refuge. 1013-Nqua 17:03, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi, I've nominated an article you worked on, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the "hook" for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created on April 27 where you can improve it if you see fit. 1013-josh 22:10, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
You've chosen an excellent topic, and you're off to a good start with it. The national wildlife refuges are often "under the radar" as protected areas. Not many people know about them, even local residents in the areas where they are located. The fact that you're writing about the very first such refuge allows you to tell a larger story about the beginnings of the system, which I think is very cool. The most compelling part of the article for me, in fact, was the opening section, where we learn about how the first refuge was founded. The information about the plume hunters makes for an engaging story. I think later in the article you lose track of the story a bit. The information about the budget cuts is appropriate, but I wanted to hear more about how this is affecting management of the Pelican Island, not the larger system. I was also wanting to hear more about the refuge itself, which is to say, how is it laid out? What flora and fauna are present? What type of habitat is it? What kind of management programs are in effect? What are the major threats to the island (besides budget cuts)? Why does the island still need to be protected? (Presumably there are few plume hunters for ladies' hats these days.) What is its importance within the ecosystem? Any more Florida newspaper articles you can dig up? Note that the "See Also" and "External Links" sections should be separated, and your footnotes are formatted as "works cited" entries, when they should be formatted as "footnotes." See my sample formatting page, as well as my explanation at Katie's talk page. You could also use more wikilinks throughout. Overall, though, a very good start! 1013-josh 06:56, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
p.s. What is the wildlife festival? 1013-josh 07:47, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Jeff, you are writing your article on Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Your article consists mainly of the history of the refuge and budget cuts that the refuge has been put through. I like how you explain on the significance of the refuge, the article does a good job of describing what the refuge is trying to accomplish. The feel of the paper is very authoritative. You don't include flowery language, but rather stay directly to the facts, which is key in an encyclopedic article. More information could be included on the actual physical characteristics of the refuge. Other than that I think the article is very good. I hope this helps!1013-Marty 20:15, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
You're on the Main Page!
Hi Jeff, your article is currently featured on the Main Page of Wikipedia in the "Did You Know?" fact box. It will be up there for the next 6+ hours. You may get some strangers stopping by your article as a result, so check the page history. 1013-josh 18:53, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Hey Jeff, Good job on your article. Your article is very straight forward and informative. I like your use of graphics. I do feel like the article itself is just about the history of the refuge. Maybe if you need some more words you can talk about recreation or something of that sorts. Sorry I can't be of more help!! Good luck on your final project!1013-whittney 16:50, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Homework
[edit]Done 1013-Jeff 06:58, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Done with Homework 2: Edit Movie article. I added a sentence to the plot summary and edited another one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Kong_%282005_film%29#Plot 1013-Jeff 21:20, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- Good work. Remember to add a comment to the edit summary box to make it easier for other users to follow your changes. And you probably shouldn't mark it as "minor" when you add a full new sentence. You may want to add the film page to your watchlist so you can see what becomes of your changes. By the way, the correct way to format an internal link such as this one is [[King Kong (2005 film)#Plot]] (which produces King Kong (2005 film)#Plot) or [[King Kong (2005 film)#Plot|King Kong]] (which produces King Kong). The method you use is for external links to websites other than Wikipedia. 1013-josh 06:19, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
I consent to continue in the project. 1013-Jeff 16:46, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, great! Let me know at any time if you change your mind and would like to switch to an off-line research assignment. 1013-josh 20:42, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Homework 4: 300-500 words + Bib. Done. I changed my topic from Protection Island to Pelican Island. Like you said before in your thoughts to me, it was more difficult finding information than I had anticipated. I hope it's okay that I changed my topic. 1013-Jeff 14:39, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
You probably want the link to my Project Draft. 1013-Jeff 14:42, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- New project looks good. Try Lexis-Nexis for newspaper articles. You may be able to dig up a few more sources. Let me know how it goes. 1013-josh 19:15, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
Finished with Homework 5: Rough Draft. Here's the link: Rough Draft. I might be doing some other edits tonight, but I didn't want to forget to sign it if I don't get anything else done. 1013-Jeff 04:23, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- Good work. You look ready to transfer over to the mainspace. I prepped your draft for the move by adding a class template and categories from the stub article, and tomorrow I'll help you move it. 1013-josh 06:58, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Finished with the article!!! Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge My final version is the one with my last edit of 6:44 10 May 2007 if anything else is changed. 1013-Jeff 06:47, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Red wikilinks
[edit]The red wikilinks are ok as long as the subject is an item that is likely to be created. The guide and plants are notable and hopefully I'll get around to them soon. Checkout Wikipedia:Red link.-Ravedave 02:46, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
