Transage is an identity where an individual feels that their experienced age differs from their chronological age as determined by their birth date. A person may identify as younger or older based on their personal experience.[1]
In Finland, the diversity of age identity and the idea of age neutrality are promoted by the Finnish Age-Neutral Association (Suomen Ikäneutraaliyhdistys Transage ry), which was officially registered on November 5, 2024. The association aims to increase understanding that age does not define an individual's value, abilities, or identity. In line with the principles of age neutrality, the organization seeks to reduce age discrimination and support individuals who feel their age perception differs from their chronological age. Additionally, the association strives to foster societal discussion on age identity and aims to reduce age-based biases, particularly in employment and social services. They advocate for an approach to age identity that emphasizes well-being and self-definition, free from prejudice or negative assumptions.[2]
Some individuals experience their age differently from their chronological age, which can be reflected in their self-perception and actions. For example, a 39-year-old Japanese man on a reality television show stated that he identifies as 28 years old because it feels like the ideal balance between maturity and youthfulness for him.[3]
