Terry D. Breverton (born 1946) is a British former businessman and academic who has written many non-fiction books on subjects, many related to Wales.
Life
[edit]Terry Breverton was born in Birmingham in 1946 to Welsh parents and was brought up in Wales.[1].He studied in England at the universities of Manchester and Lancaster. [2] He worked for many years in international business and consultancy.[3] He was a senior management consultant, mainly in manufacturing, and an international marketing director. [4] He has worked in Iran, Saudi Arabia and across Europe. Breverton then became an academic specialising in international business management, and lectured in Milan, Bologna and Wales. [1] He has been a senior lecturer at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff [5], a visiting Professor in Milan and Reggio Emilia, and is a Certified Management Consultant. He holds elected Fellowships of the _Institute of Consulting_ (FIC), The Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), and the _Chartered Institute of Marketing_ (FCIM). [1] Breverton was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) on the basis of his published works. He was awarded the Everett Helm Visiting Fellowship [6] award of the _University of Indiana_ in 2003, [2] has twice been a guest speaker at the North American Festival of Wales [7] (NAFOW) at Vancouver in 2003 and Washington in 2007, and gave the prestigious Bemis Lecture [8] at Lincoln, Massachusetts in 2008. [9]
Breverton has said that the skills he developed in research and writing as a management consultant transferred easily into writing history books. [10] In 2000 Breverton founded Glyndŵr Publishing and WalesBooks.com. [11] Glyndŵr Publishing published books by Breverton and other authors who were unable to get their non-fiction work on Wales accepted by other publishers. [4] Since 2008 he has been a full-time writer and editor, mainly writing for Apple, Quercus and Amberley. [11] He has also presented documentaries on the Discovery Channel and the History Channel. [12] Breverton is interested in reviving interest in Welsh culture and history, which has been the main focus of many of his books. [2] The development of Welsh saints' feast days and pilgrims' trails is an ongoing process. He has said, "The Welsh are treated as second-class citizens, and live in a country that is one of the most economically backward in Europe. They are rapidly becoming a minority in their own country."[3] His books have been translated into Chinese (Simplified and Complex), Japanese, Turkish, Polish, Dutch, German and Russian. They include the first biographies of Jasper Tudor and Owain Tudor (Henry VII's uncle and his grandfather). Of Jasper Tudor - Dynasty Maker, 'the first biography of the real "kingmaker" of British History', the celebrated Margaret Attwood wrote: 'Breverton for the first time makes sense of the Wars of the Roses for me.'
His An A to Z of Wales and the Welsh was reviewed as "the first Welsh encyclopaedia" and he translated from mediaeval Welsh of The Physicians of Myddfai - Cures and Remedies of the Medieval World. Of his The Book of Welsh Saints, Rowan Williams when Archbishop of Canterbury wrote: '... this book is a really extraordinary achievement: a compilation of tradition, topography and literary detective work that can have few rivals. I have enjoyed browsing it immensely, and have picked up all sorts of new lines to follow up'. Meic Stephens wrote of Breverton's 100 Great Welshmen and 100 Great Welsh Women in the Western Mail Magazine on 16 March 2002, "These are not necessarily books that you want to read from cover to cover, but to browse in ... Both are really extraordinary achievements by a single author whose industry and enterprise seem to show no bounds." [13] Breverton has won the Welsh Books Council 'English Book of the Month' award on five occasions. [14]
