CSS standardisation warning
I'm at a total loss as to why this talk page template is throwing up: "The CSS for this template should be changed. See Wikipedia:Template Standardisation." on pages such as this. I tried following the instructions on the standarisation page to the letter by trusting in class="messagebox standard-talk" to do all the formatting but it's still not happy. I'm going to revert my changes since they've failed to achieve what I wanted them to. ⁂veila# 12:37, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Making a more "non-Euro-centric" football (soccer) template
As one who enjoys both North American-style football and association (soccer) football, I purview a lot of articles in both football camps, so to speak. The template that presently exists for football of the association or soccer variety is not a bad template, but I kindly feel that, despite the soccer ball on the template, that its wording is a little Euro-centric (or non-North American-centric). Specifically, it doesn't qualify what type of football it is referring to in a verbal manner, although I realize that a soccer ball does appear on the template.
As this is the English-language Wikipedia, there are millions of visitors to football-related sites on it who think of the word "football" primarily in its North American sense. To minimize any confusion and make the Football (soccer) template less potentially Euro-centric, I created the edited version as follows:
{{Football v2}}
I then replaced the existing template with the one illustrated above. I amusingly put, in my edit summary, that this was likely my most controversial WP edit ever, and it likely was — the edit was reverted in short order (but in good faith, I'm sure!) by someone who felt that the soccer ball on the template was sufficient to avoid any confusion. I do kindly feel, however, that many young kids, as well as many of those who are not "really into" sports but who are casually browsing Wikipedia, could be confused by the use of the term "football" on the template without any verbal qualifiers added. And again, I do respectfully feel that not having such verbal qualifiers makes the template overly Euro-centric/non-NoAm-centric, thereby injecting an ever-so-slight POV into the template.
I'm not one who wants to get into "edit fights," so I have simply brought the matter up for discussion here. However you play football, it can lead to heated passions, I know [smile], but my overall goal is really to create a better Wikipedia and not "put down" any football fans of any type (including those who edit on Wikipedia!)....Again, I like football both as played with an oblong ball and a round one! :P However, I do very respectfully feel that the existing Football (soccer) template, for the aforementioned reasons, should be modified, and look forward to people's comments! —Catdude 01:15, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- It was me that reverted the edit for several reasons, of which, IIRC, one was the use of the word "soccer" along with the Project name, which only is "WikiProject Football", and not "WikiProject Football (soccer)", another was the strange wording "(of the association variety, or soccer)", which did not sound, or look good. I should probably just have edited the template to show the full link to football (soccer), but then I reverted it all instead. A little stupid of me, but I've now done what I should have done back then, and I hope that satisfies you. :) – Elisson • T • C • 01:29, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- It satisfies me fine regarding your recent edit, Elisson :-) Btw, I don't think you did anything "stupid" and commend your modesty there — I know you were trying to keep in place an item that seemed essentially workable and which minimized any possibly extraneous words :) (And hey, if anyone feels the fiery need to argue for further "soccerization" of wherever the word "Football" appears in template-type material, that's up to them, but I don't think it's imperative to do that — again, just trying to help out with whatever I can, project- and article-wise :) ) Thanks again for the recent edit! —Catdude 03:16, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Supporting of task forces
I've had a go at modifying the template for the use of task-forces - can someone have a check of User:Paulbrock/WP_Football_work/Football2 pls and check it's ok before I move it over here? Comments welcome! Paulbrock 23:00, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
- I've gone and made the changes, please leave a message for me at my talk page if something breaks! Paulbrock 00:35, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
White space
I notice there's an annoying amount of white space at the top of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football, likely because of the template syntax box below the template itself. Could this possibly be remedied? - Dudesleeper · Talk 19:00, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
xxx-Class category links
This template does not supply a category parameter to the xxx-Class template it invokes. This makes the links for the GA, FA, etc. class football articles (which aren't categories) go to the generic categories for this class of article, e.g. Category:GA-Class_articles rather than Category:GA-Class football articles, although the page is actually added to the football specific category (see Talk:1930 FIFA World Cup for an example). In addition, any category class page tagged with template:Football is put in the default category, i.e. Category:Unassessed football articles while the table on the page does not provide a link (see Category talk:Football (soccer) clubs for an example).
I'll make changes to fix these anomalies in the next day or two unless someone objects. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:17, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
- GA/FA/B/Start/Stub-class - agree they do point to the general category, rather than the e.g. GA football subcategory. This seems to be the standard for most Wikiproject templates, probably because we all 'borrow' from each other!! I'd agree unless there's a good reason for doing the same as most other Wikiprojects, it would be more useful to point to Category:GA-Class football articles.
- Category-class. This is a bit of a funny one, also discussed at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football/Assessment. 'Category-class' is unofficial (i.e. not supported by v1.0 Assessment). We could add a link I suppose...I don't mind either way. If we are going to 'support' the use of category-class, the template should be amended to put Category class into Category:Non-article football pages. Paulbrock 15:48, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
I have a revised version at template:Football/sandbox. I've tried this on:
and it does what I expect, i.e. the link in the table is to the football specific class categories and categories are both categorized in and linked to Category:Non-article football pages. Comments? -- Rick Block (talk) 01:36, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- For a better view on this, please view this page. We have to find a common consistency with regards to templates here, so as to have a greater professionalism with regards to templates. Any comments about this would be welcomed. --Siva1979Talk to me 03:53, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Since Siva1979 had made the same proposal to multiple Wikiproject banners that they all look and behave like Template:Football, I have started a centralized discussion at the Village Pump to obtain wider input. --Farix (Talk) 13:14, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Large gap
When articles are given the NA rating there is now a large gap between the next piece of text on that page as shown the Talk:List of Aston Villa captains page. I think this is a result of the change linked here. I think this is a worthwhile addition though, so does someone know how to fix it? I have left a note on the main WP:FOOTY page as well Thanks Woodym555 18:25, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Irish + Non-League Parameters
Please could someone have a look at this template at Talk:Andy King (footballer born 1956). I added both the Non-League and Irish parameters, but it looks a bit messy. Have I done something wrong or is this a bug in the template? Thanks. --Jameboy (talk) 21:45, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
- Simply, the Non-League and Irish parameters were set up before the taskforce introduction, so they work slightly differently; I've suggested both these 'child' Wikiprojects become Task forces... Paulbrock (talk) 21:53, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

How does the infobox work?
How does the coding in this infobox cause articles to be filed in their proper category/categories when they are tagged with a task force's tag? I am very curious, as I have been working on this on another tag (for WikiProject Constructed languages), which has a task force tag (for the Esperanto task force) that does not automatically place articles in the categories they need to be in (Category:Esperanto task force articles). I would greatly appreciate if anyone is able to tell me what exactly does that in this template. Thank you! TFCforever (talk) 23:08, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Template update - non-casesensitive and rearrangement
I want to post this here first before requesting an edit to the template to make sure that this will be non-controversial. The updated version is at Template:Football/sandbox and you can see the changes made at this diff. An example of what the template looks like in-use is at this oldid.
The edits I have made are -
- Move Non-League and Irish notices underneath the banner so that thay a) move in line with the other displayed sub-projects and task forces and b) do not conflict and break the template when used together (as at this oldid). This uses Image:Football pictogram.svg for non-league and Image:Ireland smaller.svg for Ireland.
- Amended variables from e.g.
{{#if:{{{England|}}}|
to{{#if:{{{England|{{{england|}}}}}}|
for all tags, this allows the use of lower or upper case for all instances. This also fixes the current situation where both Spain=yes and spain=yes is used and both forms are in the unedited current template, by allowing both forms - we'll catch all those mistagged entries. - Changed the Spanish task force's categories for assessment and importance from "Spain football articles" to "football in Spain articles". Both have been created, both are being used - football in Spain is consistent with the majority of the category structure used by other task forces.
- Some grammar changes - mainly introducing a "the" into "is supported by <taskforce>"
- Made the women's icon size smaller for consistency.
All of these could be classed as fixes but I'm not sure whether everyone would be happy with the first fix. Your comments/assent/dissent would be welcome (and I mean dissent as the opposite of assent not swearing :P ) Nanonic (talk) 00:52, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
