Tree Chart in mobile view

[edit]

I often include family trees in biohraphic articles. I do them always in the same way. They look fine on my laptop, but not in mobile view. I tried to see what it is that causes problems in mobile view but could not find it. Please have a look at Antoine Hamilton, Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty, or other biographies with family trees. With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 14:45, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Which mobile web browser are you using @Johannes Schade? The only web browser that I've found has problems displaying this template is Firefox for Android, with the borders and connector lines only rendering partially, and they render differently most times I scroll. But older versions of Firefox for Android, and other web browsers seem to render them correctly (though I haven't tested them all). This makes me think it might be a bug with Firefox for Android: if it is Firefox you're having problems with, they have a very user friendly issue tracker to report web compatibility issues here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/home --YodinT 10:14, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Yodin, thank you very much for your reply. I do not have a cellphone. I looked at my family trees using the mobile view provided with the source viewer on my laptop (clicking on the "Mobile view" link at the very bottom) that simulates how it would look on a cell phone. In desktop view all the boxes containing the descriptions of the family members have the same size, the horizontal distances betwen neighbouring boxes also are all of the same quite ample size, the inner margins of the frame around the tree are all of the same very small width. In (simulated) mobile view certain boxes are much smaller than others, some of the horizontal distances between boxes have become very small (they almost touch each other), and a broad inner margin appears along the right border. I asked somebody to verify on a real cellphone and it looks just as the mobile view simulates it. That person described the family tree as "squished on the right side". I do not see problems with connection lines. The browser I use on my lap top is Google Chrome. I tried Firefox and see the same problems. With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 18:08, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! I see! This looks like it might be to do with CSS styling for mobile view. I've raised this at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Template:Tree chart issues in mobile view, as they will be much better placed to see if this is the cause of the problem, and if so would probably know what the best way to resolve it would be. (Can I also just say thanks for all your work on the articles you linked to above!) --YodinT 14:03, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Alignment

[edit]

Why is it so hard to align things when making charts? I spent an hour making this simple chart:

Family tree of monarchs of the Salian Franks
Merovech
411–458
450–458
Childeric I
437–481
458–481
Basina of
Thuringia
438–477
Evochildis
of Cologne
Clovis I
466–511
481–509
Clotilde
474–545
3 others
Theuderic I
487–534
Chlodomer
495–524
Childebert I
496–558
Chlothar I
497–561

Please help because my brain starts hurting when I try to continue this tree. Doctor Alex (talk · contributions · sandbox) 16:49, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Doctor Alex: yep, this template is a bit of a nightmare to edit! Have you tried User:Daduxing/familytree.js? It adds an option to the toolbox menu when you're editing a page with this template, which allows you to convert it to a more easily editable form, and then another option to convert it back when you're ready to save your edits. --YodinT 12:23, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have not tried that.
Instead I've made my brain hurt more by almost finishing that family tree up to Theuderic IV, Carloman I, and Charlemagne. Thank you for the suggestoion.

Dark mode support

[edit]

Implement changes in Module:Tree chart/sandbox and Module:Tree chart/data/sandbox, which remove the explicitly-defined black color to provide support for dark mode. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 13:39, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Colored and Thicker Tiles?

[edit]

Just out of curiosity, but is there a way to implement colors for the lines that connect the boxes? Additionally, is there also a way to increase the thickness of the lines so that the color is more obvious? I want to use colors in addition to the dotted and dashed lines to further designate more relations and make said lines more visible in the page. Thanks in advance. Not at the moment; I think it would be difficult to ensure this was accessible e.g. for people using screen readers, etc. If you're using colours for the cells make sure to read MOS:COLOUR too. --YodinT 13:03, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
