House Seal image

[edit]

User:Frietjes Has constantly removed the senate seal from the template, under the claims it makes it too big. But that's not true. As you can see from these two screen-shots (1, 2), adding the seal simply moves the names over to the left more. There is so much space between the names without the seal, that there is plenty of room to spare. Frietjes, please give a better reason for it to be excluded. try viewing the template on a narrow display. the primary purpose of a navigation template is for navigation. decorative images do not assist with navigation and reduce the space available for the actual navigation content. Frietjes (talk) 15:57, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I use both narrow and wide displays. We do not cater to people with a certain type of display over others. If we did, you would be removing these images from all navigation templates, but you are not doing so. These templates are not being treated as "galleries for decorative images", and you know that. A gallery has plenty of images, these templates only have a single directly related image added to them. Fry1989 eh? 20:33, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Frietjes. In fact, it's probably a good idea to remove these from all the Legislature templates that use navbox columns. We should do our best to keep Wikipedia Accessible on a wide range of devices. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 03:14, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Can we choose a place for a centralized discussion rather than copying and pasting the threads on several different talk pages? How about Template talk:Massachusetts State Senators or really anywhere is fine, so long as it is in one place. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 03:18, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Centralized Discussion Here Fry1989 eh? 04:33, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted frietjes attempted backdoor removal of the seal per the current consensus on the centralized discussion that it should stay the way it is. Fry1989 eh? 17:09, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds like we should start the discussion again, since there has been consensus to remove the seals from other templates, like Massachusetts State Senators. It looks like Frietjes only tried to remove the seal from this template, and not the others. I would be interested in hearing why. In my opinion, it should be removed from this template, due to the extreme width, but I would be interested in hearing if there is any strong reason for keeping it. Thanks! • Comment. Having just compared the screenshots mentioned above, the seal does appear to eat more than its fair share of template space. I'd suggest either removing it or using something crafty (a nested Navbox?) to e.g. move it toward the top righthand corner of the template and free the rest of the space for use. yes, that is my feeling as well. I think at this point we can consider these templates on a case-by-case basis. if the seal is significant, we can link to it in the above or below section, or (even better) link to the article about it. with the seal, the template is about 1110px wide, without the seal it is about 1090px (which is still quite wide). we should not only remove the seal, but look into reducing the number of columns as well. The way the consensus was, the ones that were in were to stay and the ones that were out were to stay out. I have no objection to another discussion, but even if you're against the seals being in the templates for whatever reason, you can't possibly support sneaky and dishonest backdoor attempts by Frietjes to get them out with edit summaries like "try a new numbering method, fix a redirect, ..", which doesn't mention the image at all. As per why they should be in, I've made that argument clear many times, and I've proven through screen shots that the seals don't eat up extra space at all, they simply take away spare space that was already there between the names.
