Template-protected edit request on 25 November 2024

[edit]

Please change the parent to Cypriniphysi as per the 5th edition of Fishes of the World, also change ref to {{cite web |url=https://www.calacademy.org/scientists/catalog-of-fishes-classification |title=Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes Classification |access-date=5 November 2024 |publisher=[[California Academy of Sciences]]}} as per recent changes to WP:Fishes taxonomy. Quetzal1964 (talk) 13:24, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{Edit template-protected}} template. There is no taxonomy page for Cypriniphysi, nor does it have an article or even a redirect page on Wikipedia. Should {{Taxonomy/Cypriniphysae}} be moved to {{Taxonomy/Cypriniphysi}}? We need input from editors who know taxonomy. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 19:20, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Paine Ellsworth Yes Cypriniphysae and Cypriniphisi are synonymous. The Taxonomy used above the level of order in WP:Fishes is that from the 5th edition of the Fishes of the World. This has been discussed at that project page. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fishes#Retry proposal to change the Taxonomy used by Wikiproject:Fishes. You should be made aware, editor Quetzal1964, that templates like {{u}} and {{ping}} only work when used in your initial signed post. They don't work when added after the fact. I'm not a scientist, so I must ask, do you mean that Cypriniphysae and Cypriniphysi are scientifically synonymous? If that is so, then all that should be required is to create a redirect from Cypriniphysi that targets the Cypriniformes article and perhaps to just change the reference here on the Template:Taxonomy/Cypriniformes page. If the two names are scientific synonyms, then why is there a need to change the parent on this page? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 19:54, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if this proposal includes creating a redirect and perhaps moving pages, we must be sure to have the correct spelling. So far you've spelled it two ways, "Cypriniphysi" and "Cypriniphisi". Which is correct? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 20:14, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies. The correct spelling is Cypriniphysi (pasted from the Fishes of the World) and yes they are different names for the same thing, a clade of fishes. It's not important in the big scheme of things but as the project agreed to use the Fishes of the World classification then it's in line with the rest of the project's taxonomy.Quetzal1964 (talk) 20:19, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also Cypriniphysi is a monotypic clade with Cypriniformes as its only member, so it would redirect to Cypriniformes as per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (fauna)#Monotypic taxa. Quetzal1964 (talk) 20:25, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've created the redirect at Cypriniphysi that corresponds with the redirect at Cypriniphysae. To change the parent of this taxonomy template to Cypriniphysi would require either creating a taxonomy template at {{Taxonomy/Cypriniphysi}} or renaming the {{Taxonomy/Cypriniphysae}} page to the synonym title. I'm unclear on which choice you want, but either way, a consensus would be needed. Perhaps a move request should be opened at Template talk:Taxonomy/Cypriniphysae?
