I'm sure this is well-intended, but how is this meaningfully different from {{historical}}? The effect of both should be exactly the same. >Radiant< 15:39, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- My original idea was for a tag which would imply that while the Wikipedia-space page isn't currently active, it isn't a rejected idea - its just been replaced by another page. (See, for example, some of the replaced CSDs.) This template was meant to emphasize that it isn't a past idea that faded away ({{historical}}) or a rejected idea ({{rejected}}), just one that has been made obsolete by another page which says similar things. Do you or David think the wording should emplasize that more than it does? Picaroon 22:16, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- Given the strong similarity between pages that should be tagged {{historical}} and pages that should be tagged {{superseded}}, (the major distinction being the existence of one or more direct replacement pages) I see no reason why the tags' wording shouldn't be similar as well. —David Levy 22:36, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- Superseded pages are a subset of historical pages; historical pages haven't necessarily been superseded by other pages. Those that have been should to link to the pages that replaced them (as this template allows) or be turned into redirects (if the content isn't worth displaying). —David Levy 22:36, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Red X
[edit]I feel it may be questionable to have the red X in this box. If an official policy or guideline is not actually disapproved of but merely superseded by another policy that encompasses it, I don't like having the red X: it makes an implication that the current page is disapproved of. What about something like a blue arrow pointing up? Mangojuicetalk 05:38, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- This template is patterned after the similar {{historical}} template, which has used the red X icon for quite some time. Upon creating the {{superseded}} tag, I initially used a black X (and changed the {{historical}} tag to match), but this generated complaints. —David Levy 23:07, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

This was recently discussed at Template talk:Historical#New icon and it was decided to change the icon. I've updated here to match. -- Ϫ 11:42, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
