Created

[edit]

Created this as spillover for those characters that keep popping up in Template:Star Trek regulars. The requirements there should be pretty strict. The ones I've established here are a little more arbitrary. I think they're reasonable, but feel free to debate and change them (as if I could stop you):

Requirements for inclusion on any list:

  • Must have a hyperlink going to one of the following (in order of preference):
  • 1. Their own article
  • 2. A heading about the character from another article
  • 3. A disambiguation page mentioning the character
(Exceptions may be made where reasonable. The "Duras sisters" article would be one.)
  • Must not be a regular on any Star Trek series (i.e., included in the Star Trek regulars template)
  • Re-used footage does not count as an appearance. (E.g., "The Menagerie", "Trials and Tribble-ations", or "Previously on Star Trek..." sequences.)

Requirements for inclusion on a specific series list:

  • Must have appeared in at least three non-consecutive episodes of any series (or combination thereof) or at least five consecutive episodes. TOS and TAS are counted as one series. Movies 1-7 and 11 can be counted as TOS episodes for this purpose, and movies 7-10 may similarly be counted as TNG episodes.

Requirements for inclusion on "Multiple series" list:

  • Must have appeared multiple times in more than one series. Again TOS and TAS are counted as one series. (For example, Q's DS9 apperance wouldn't count toward this, but his TNG and VGR appearances would.)
OR
  • Must have appeared at least three times in various series and films but not qualify to be listed on the list for any specific series. (E.g., appeared once in TNG, once in DS9, and once in VGR.)

Requirements for inclusion on "Movies" list:

  • Must have appeared in at least three movies.

The following characters would qualify under the above rules if they had pages about them. Please add them if the pages are created:

Multiple series: Nechayev (TNG/DS9)

TOS: Brent, DeSalle, Gabler, Galloway, Hadley, Hansen, Harper, Kelowitz, Komack, Roger Lemli, Angela Martine

TNG: Livingston (fish)

DS9: Maihar'Du, Sarah Sisko

Bajorans: Furel
Ferengi: Broik

Voy: Carey, Hogan

Ent: Chang, Cutler, Future Guy, Kelby, Williams

MACOs: Hamboyen, Hawkins, Kelly, Money, Richards, Romero, Ryan, Woods (If enough of these get their own articles, I would recommend putting them under a "MACOs" heading with Major Hayes.)
Xindi council:Xindi-Insectoid councillor, Xindi-Primate councillor

Of course, there may be other characters I have overlooked.--Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 21:34, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Duras sisters

[edit]

Just reverted an example of the multiple series requirement.

The Duras sisters were moved to the "Multiple series" list, presumably because of thier appearance on DS9. However, they only appeared once, meaning that they don't meet the requirement: "Must have appeared multiple times in more than one series."

Just to clear up why other characters qualify for this:

Barclay, Gowron, the O'Briens, Q, Alexander, and Lwaxana are all fairly obvious: They were recurring characters on two series (each). Gowron: Appeared many times on TNG and DS9.

Sarek technically only applies as a TNG character by the above requirements (since he only appeared on TOS once), but "Yesteryear" and Star Treks III, IV, and VI count toward this.

Kang, Koloth, and T'Pau qualify under the other rule: "Must have appeared at least three times in various series and films but not qualify to be listed on the list for any specific series. (E.g., appeared once in TNG, once in DS9, and once in VGR.)"

I guess Kor doesn't actually qualify; I'm moving him to DS9.

Of course, these requirements are pretty arbitrary and I don't expect everyone to agree with me on them. Nonetheless, if you think you have a better idea, please explain it on the talk page. Thanks.--Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 23:18, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kor

[edit]

Personally, I disagree with having Kor on the multiple characters list, but if we're going to have him there, he at least should be taken off of the DS9 list.

However, just to reiterate the reasoning: Koloth and Kang were recurring characters throughout the Star Trek series, but were not recurring on any particular show. (Koloth appeared once each on TOS, TAS, and DS9 [not counting "Trials and Tribble-ations"]; Kang appeared once each on TOS, DS9, and Voyager.) Basically, either we put them on the "multiple series list" or not at all.

Kor, although he did appear on multiple series, was specifically a recurring character on DS9, but was not a recurring character on any other show (appeared on TOS and TAS once each; even counting those as the same series, that doesn't hit the magic "3"), so I think he is better placed on the DS9 list.--Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 06:36, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Farrell

[edit]

I'm just going through the template, updating the links, so there are no links to disambiguation or redirect pages. As a result, I have removed the link for Farrell, as at the moment it is linking to a disambig page, and the link on that page is to a non-existant page. If someone wants to write an article/stub/whatever about this character, then add the link then —Preceding unsigned comment added by StephenBuxton (talkcontribs) 12:24, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Same argument applies to the following removed characters: Nakamura; Mezoti (adding to this list as I find them)StephenBuxton (talk) 12:33, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mezoti had been redirected without merging any content. I've now re-merged her so will put her back into this list. - Fayenatic (talk) 13:31, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kimara Cretak

[edit]

The article for Kimara Cretak has been removed. If you follow the link, you get to the original article, which has been removed and merged onto another page... where the section does not appear to exists (or has been removed some time ago)

I need to shoot off now, and will copy the original article onto the page you get redirected to when I get back. However, if anyone else knows where it should go, then plesae feel free to jump in and correct it. StephenBuxton (talk) 12:44, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. StephenBuxton (talk) 17:22, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template updated

[edit]

Right - that's this template completely updated with regards to the links. There should be no redirects or links to non-existant articles. I notice though that there are a lot of articles that are up for merging. Should these be done, PLEASE can someone make sure that the template is updated accordingly. Naming convention

[edit]

I stumbled on this template because of the article about Brian Bonsall -> Worf's son Alexander. Several of the names on the template are listed in ways that a casual fan such as myself isn't necessarily going to understand. "J. Crusher", "A. Rozhenko", "Ro L." for example. Yet, other names are all spelled out - Molly & Keiko O'Brien, for example, which following the previous convention would be M. O'Brien & K. O'Brien. It would certainly be easier to either list the whole name (Jack Crusher, Alexander Rozhenko, Alyssa Ogawa) or use the name they're best known by (Jack Crusher, Alexander, Nurse Ogawa) instead of semi-cryptic abbreviations. There isn't anything written here that gives me reason to think there's a preference, and most fictional series templates which list characters that I've seen generally use the names people are known by in the template, so I would think the last example I gave would be best. Thought I'd ask instead of stomping on toes. Thanks. Salamurai (talk) 20:55, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, after a week, no one appears to care, so I went and did what I thought was appropriate. Salamurai (talk) 18:52, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I agree with the change. When I first created this page I followed the convention shown at [1], but I don't necessarily think it was the best convention to begin with. I do disagree with expanding "Winn A." to "Vedek Winn"; she was only a Vedek from the season one finale to near the end of season two, so either "Kai Winn" or "Winn Adami" is more appropriate. (I'm going with the latter.)
Incidentally, the ones that were spelled out were done so due to ambiguity. (M. O'Brien could be Molly or Miles, and K. O'Brien could be Keiko or Kirayoshi.) --Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 20:53, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
check, check, check. I couldn't remember Winn's particular title and I never went to the character's article, but "Vedek" was in Bareil's. I'd had enough of Trek in general around Voyager year 3 and I think I skipped the entire last two seasons of DS9 so I didn't even know/recall about Kirayoshi until now. Cartwright and movie requirements

[edit]

When I first established the page, I had recommended that movie recurring characters have at least three appearances. Since then Cartwright has been added (who appeared in IV and VI), but I don't want to arbitrarily say that anyone needs to stick to my original suggestion. However, since consistency would be nice, I'll open for suggestions: Should we require three appearances for recurring film characters, or just include anyone who appeared twice? I'm up for either. If we change it to two, we can also (potentially) add David Marcus (2/3), Klaa (5/6), the Klingon ambassador (4/6), and a few crew members from the TNG movies. (And probably others that I'm forgetting.) Also, Amanda Grayson, Alyssa Ogawa, and Guinan could arguably be promoted to "Multiple series" or listed on both their respective series and the movies. (I never really set a suggestion for that situation.) Whatdya think? --Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 21:11, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Marcus ought to be listed, as he's a significant character in both films but only appears there. I don't remember Klaa in #6, but looking it up shows the same actor played an unnamed Klingon in 6, but I don't see that as being significant enough. Side note, What about Miles O'Brien? He was a "recurring" character on Next-Gen before becoming a "regular" on DS9. Also, Riker's duplicate Thomas - where does he fall? Salamurai (talk) 06:13, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering about O'Brien too. I've been trying to avoid duplication between this and Template:Star Trek regulars, but it feels like an odd omission not to list him here as a TNG recurring character. Maybe we should add him in. By the same token, we should probably count Deanna Troi for Voyager. (She made three appearances on the show.) However, I don't think they should be listed as "multiple series"; their appearances as regulars shouldn't count toward this list. I'll go ahead and add them in.
Along similar lines, what do you think about including the Emergency Medical Hologram as a multiple series character? EMHs appeared on DS9, Voyager (even not counting the Doctor), and in First Contact. (Of course, they weren't all the same one.)
I hesitate to count Thomas Riker as a recurring character. He only appeared in two episodes total, so while he was a returning character, opening this up to characters who have only appeared twice is opening the floodgates to make this list an unmanageable mess. (Although, as stated earlier, I can see the logic in making an exception for the movies.)
I'll give it a few days and see if anyone else chimes in on the movies. If not, then let's go ahead and consider two appearances enough for film characters.--Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 08:14, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

pike

[edit]

moved pike & grayson to "multiple series" since that seems the best fit now (grayson should have been there anyway, as she appears in the film series); maybe we should consider the implications of the "reboot" & etc on organization here? most relevant point: how do we categorize christopher pike now? he's a major character in the film, & he lived thru it, so he's quite likely to return... Lx 121 (talk) 13:12, 18 May 2009 (UTC) ...not to mention that they both turn up in the novels, comics, etc. (not sure if they're in any of the games yet, but pike certainly will be); i'm not really a wikip trek editor, i ended up here surfing a random string of edits, but is thatere/shouldn't there be templates to cover those as well? Number One?

[edit]

I am not clear why Number One is here under multiple series as she only appears in the Original Series. Is this an error? Dunarc (talk) 19:37, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As number one has now appeared in multiple series, my concern no longer applies. Dunarc (talk) 20:35, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Maggie Hubbell

[edit]

I have removed Maggie Hubbell as the link was to List of Star Trek characters (G–M)#H, but the character is not mentioned there. Dunarc (talk) 22:55, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lower Decks?

[edit]

Should we add lower decks to this, or wait until more of the characters have articles?

Ro Laren

[edit]

I'm not sure I got the "Multiple series" rules right. Ro Laren is a TNG character with a major appearance in a single Picard episode. Does she move to "Multiple series" or stay in TNG? DGtal (talk) 09:06, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
