Anime =/= Speculative fiction

anime has no place in this template. If it's science fiction anime, fantasy fiction anime writers, dystopian anime, then okay. But summing all anime/manga in one ugly dump doesnt cut it. It's like adding a section of television programs, television producers, television whatnots instead of something like list of science fiction television series. My first suggestion: can the attitude. There's no reason to get all uppity over a template. Second suggestion: if you're planning on making any significant number of contributions to the site, I recommend you create an account rather than sticking with the anonymity of an IP address. Finally, if there were specific sections or articles for "science fiction anime, fantasy fiction anime writers, dystopian anime," and so on, then I would agree with you. As there are not, and a very large percentage of anime falls into the speculative fiction realm, I think it is perfectly legitimate to have in this template since it's not connected to any of the other non-anime articles. It may even point some people to things they never knew existed, and that's the whole point of an encyclopedia: learning new things. --nihon 03:16, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, sorry about the attitude, but for the record we all had our fair share of dealing with anime fanboys, the majority of whom aren't very pleasant or easy to talk to. Anyway, it's a good idea to create a section on sci-fi and fantasy anime, because there are a lot of them. But the sad thing is that a great proportion of anime deals with school life, fanservice, sports, relationship dramas etc, and it can be misleading to add it to the template 149.142.103.63 20:48, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

I still recommend that you create an account if you're going to be doing any more edits. It shows people you've made an effort to become part of the community and aren't just winging through making random edits to annoy people. As for the percentage of anime that deals with or includes speculative fiction, I would say that about 60-70% of it does. In actuality, the percentage of anime and manga that doesn't include at least some elements is small. I've even seen salaryman manga that has it in it (I read the salaryman manga all the time while I lived in tha Japan). ANime and manga lend themselves to speculative fiction, whether science fiction, fantasy, horror, alternative history (there's a lot of this one), or what have you. That doesnt' really make any sense at all. (please re-read the first post). All fantasy/scifi belong to speculative fiction, that's why they are in the template. Not all (a lot less than that) anime/manga are speculative fiction. A big chunk are sports (two sumo titles and lots about martial arts and baseball), romance (hundreds of girl mangas), school-related, hentai (worth around 20 monthly magazines, each 200-450 pages long) and other material having very little to nothing to do with scifi/fantasy. To say that at least 60-70% are speculative fiction is quite pushing it. If you made a list of mecha anime or whatever, then by all means add it in. And please quit saying that I need an account and assume i'm here to annoy people, because I don't think you're one of those anime fanboys, so please. I don't think you're as familiar with anime and manga as you think you are. I guessed 60-70% of them are sf, but I was guessing on the low side. I've read hundreds of different magazines (meaing hundreds of individual, differently titled manga magazines) in Japan, and I've seen thousands of different anime series in Japan. The large majority (at least 60-70%, if not more) are speculative fiction in some way. It may be as simple as being set in the not-too-distant future, or it maybe set in some world that's almost like ours, but not quite (Someday's Dreamers fits into that category). The fact is, the vast majority of manga (and be association, anime) have some speculative fiction in them to one degree or another. Yes, there are some that are simply romance, some that are simply hentai, or sports, or school, but even a large percentage of those stray frequently into the sf realm. --nihon 23:46, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
