- If you are referring to the fact that the Anne Beadell Highway, Gunbarrel Highway and Mount Davies Road are included in the Outback tracks section, then the answer lies with the person who built the tracks Len Beadell, who had quite a sense of humour. Even he was surprised when the name "Gunbarrel Highway" started appearing on maps of the time, as he called the track "Gunbarrel" as a joke. The logic of their inclusion lies more with the nature of the surface of the carriageway rather than the name. Summerdrought (talk) 21:00, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- No - I was thinking more of what makes roads such as Barossa Valley Way, Southern Ports Highway, Strathalbyn Road, Onkaparinga Valley Road, Strathalbyn-Goolwa Road, Tod Highway, Wellington Road worthy of inclusion, but not Anzac Highway, Birdseye Highway, Karoonda Highway, Goyder Highway, Flinders Ranges Way, Playford Highway and any/all others from List of highways in South Australia. --Scott Davis Talk 01:41, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
- Scott - anyone is entitled to edit Wikipedia. If you have knowledge of missing data, and feel it needs to be included, go ahead. I live at a distance far removed from the roads you mention, and do not have a ready reference (such as a road map) to edit the template. Summerdrought (talk) 03:25, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
- I haven't edited road articles much until recently. I didn't want to make big changes to this template if there had been selection criteria I was unaware of. It might have been "SA roads with articles on Wikipedia at the time the template was created" which is not a good criterion, but it could have been derived from length or traffic volume or pavement width or a reference of main roads shown on some official source which is better than me just rearranging and adding more. --Scott Davis Talk 10:06, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately many templates, categories, and list articles exist with the inclusion/exclusion criteria of some Wikipedian(s) saying "I think this road ought to be included." The only way to have objective criteria, for this or for List of highways in South Australia, is to use the government's classification of what is a highway (or major road, or whatever classification levels they use). Some documents I've been able to find are:
- Functional Hierarchy, pages 15 & 17, showing "major traffic routes" around Adelaide and across the state
- These maps and these maps, but they are really more for showing who has responsibility for what roads
- However, I've also just found that there is a roads dataset, which I'm currently downloading to see if it has more information. - Evad37 [talk] 02:29, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
- Well, the dataset has the following 3/4-letter classifications: (I've added what they presumably mean, based on the roads classified as such)
- ART – Arterial
- BUS – Busway
- COLL – Collector
- FREE – Freeway
- HWY – Highway
- LOCL – Local road
- SUBA – Sub-arterial
- TRK2 – 2 wheel drive track
- TRK4 – 4 wheel drive track
- UND – Undefined(?)
- I'll look into generating listings for the ART, FREE, and HWY classifications, which cover all the major roads (some roads named as a Highway are actually classified as Arterial – much like the situation other states) - Evad37 [talk] 02:57, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

I would suggest this template should show the roads classified as freeways and highways (split into interstate/intrastate), but not those classified otherwise (including the roads named as highways but classified as arterials). - That certainly makes for a big list! Thanks for the effort. First pass filter - almost all of the ones named Street/Terrace/Square and some called Road will turn out to be the bits of longer roads that are inside town boundaries and don't need to be listed separately. The State Rural Roads maps are what I've been using primarily to decide which intersections are worthy of listing in the Road Junction Lists for highway articles. Was your list generated from the database or shapefile? Either a minimum length filter or a "not completely inside town boundaries" database join might filter it back to the list we actually want (outside of Adelaide metro area, anyway). The datasets including roads look like they'd be good for making some decent maps too, but I didn't find a coastlines or boundaries layer to give the map an edge. They're licenced CC-BY, so should be OK to use for Wikipedia (and I think Commons?) --Scott Davis Talk 06:16, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
I've worked on the list to remove duplicates, roads in Victoria, streets in towns, roads in the Adelaide Metro Area, roads that are named in the list, but the name is incidental to a much longer route, and ended up with this draft that I believe is NPOV.
