Incorrect usage in templates
[edit]I recently had to clean up a bunch of camera-related templates (Template:Pentax DSLR cameras, Template:Canon DSLR cameras, Template:Nikon DSLR cameras, Template:Olympus DSLR cameras, Template:Sony DSLR cameras) which were incorrectly using {{PAGENAME}} when they should have been using {{subst:PAGENAME}} (the intention was to link to the templates, not to the pages transcluding them).
Could an administrator add some help text somewhere explaining how to use PAGENAME and FULLPAGENAME templates correctly?? I would do it, but this template is fully protected... ǝɹʎℲxoɯ (contrib) 00:47, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Redirect this template to Template:PAGENAME, to follow standard (look at stuff like Template:BASEPAGENAME to understand why this is done). I really don't want to have to type out this long rationale, but I'll go ahead... {{PAGENAME}} has a better explanation for what exactly the template does (to prevent confused TfDs that think this is redundant to/overriding the magic words). The code for {{PAGENAME}} is as follows:
{{PAGENAME:{{{1|}}}}}<includeonly>[[Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word|PN00{{PAGENAME}}]]
If an editor accidentally does something like {{PAGENAME|Wikipedia:AfD}}
instead of {{PAGENAME:Wikipedia:AfD}}
, it will transclude the template PAGENAME instead of using the magic word. Currently {{pagename}} doesn't do that, it just transcludes the page name for whatever page the template's on, ignoring any variable. Also, {{PAGENAME}} has a tracking category.
