The photo describes an informal settlement previously referred to as a Squatter Camp. What is misleading is that such places may be found on the outskirts of Soweto and many other places however they are rarely found inside Soweto. These camps usually comprise immigrants from neighboring countries and are not allowed within the confines of Soweto.

Such settlements are either demolished if illegal or fitted out with electricity and sanitation if they are sanctioned.
