Talk about a run-on sentence... "It is believed that the use of a limited number of web-resolution screenshots for identification and critical commentary on the computer or video game in question or the copyrighted character(s) depicted on the screenshot in question on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law, as such display does not significantly impede the right of the copyright holder to sell the copyrighted material, is not being used to turn a profit in this context, and presents ideas that cannot be exhibited otherwise." Table of contents breakage

The table of contents on Category:Screenshots of computer and video games currently does not work correctly. All letters link to Image:LETTER, but the "Image" part of that is ignored for the purpose of indexing the images. I think this should be fixed in this template, rather than in the category page, because some images are included within the category without using this template, and those do work correctly. If someone knows how to fix this, please do so. Thanks! StuartBrady 03:37, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Actually it wasn't that either was wrong, but that they didn't match. Generally we index image categories by the image name so that not everything ends up under I, so I fixed the category page and undid the template change. JYolkowski // talk 18:39, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, but there are still images under 'I' which don't belong there. CategoryNamedTOC|Image is used for other categories and works for those categories, which is why I tried to fix it in the template. Thanks for trying, though. StuartBrady 21:34, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Actually, there's more to this than I first thought - some images that use Template:Game-screenshot are affected. StuartBrady 21:41, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
What you need to do is to make null edits on all of the images indexed under "Image". Simply popping into edit and hitting "Save page" will cause the images to be re-indexed to the proper place in the category. JYolkowski // talk 03:06, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Okay, done - thanks! StuartBrady 13:38, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Company that developed the game

Do you think it would perhaps be better changed to: "the copyright for it is most likely held by the company or person that developed the game?" This template is used for a screenshot of Scorched Earth, which was developed entirely by one person. Just a thought. 87.232.1.49 21:53, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Clarification needed

Ok, there are editors using this vague template as an excuse to over-reach Fair Use.

  • A photograph is copyright to the photographer.
  • The contents of the photograph are copyright to the owner of the content.

...

  • Fair-use is you taking a photo of a game to upload to an article.
  • Fair-use IS NOT taking a photo from a random website and uploading it into the Wiki.

Please read: 1, 2. BcRIPster 21:56, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

What sort of change are you proposing? From the sound of things, it seems the users involved may need to be reminded of our fair use policy; if there's a particular template modification that could resolve this, I'm not sure if I see it, and it's not clear what sort of change you want, either way. =\ So, what sort of text would you like added or removed? Luna Santin 03:03, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Well, I was thinking something expansion on the bullets above, but I'm not sure how to keep it concise? The problem relates to a lack of understanding of where the lines for fair-use and derivate works reside in regards to screenshots of games found on the web. There appears to be this belief that any screenshot of a videogame is fair use, discounting the fact that that only applies to the photographer/publisher of the original photograph. A reuse of that photo by a third party without consent of the photographer is a copyright violation. BcRIPster 03:42, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Game screenshots are generally considered to have their copyright reside in the maker of the game, rather than the taker of the screenshot, because that's where the creativity came from. A reviewer won't come after you for reusing their screenshots (and would be on dubious ground anyway). Is there an example I'm missing? Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 08:56, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Nothing personal, but for the sake of brevity, maybe you should read this recent exchange I had at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games/Archive_21#Screenshots.3F in its' entirety. Then come back and we can talk more. Don't feel bad, most people don't understand all of this, and the gaming mags haven't helped matters much. A screenshot of a game is covered by two copyrights. One with the content (by the game creator), and the second with the photographer (who took/published the photo). The photographer may have fair-use/derivative works protections depending on how he intends to use the photo (thereby protecting him from being sued by the content creator). A third party who wants to use that photo has to get permsion from the original photographer first, and then if they wish to use the content of the photo in a commercial manor, they will need permissions from both the content creator and the photographer, and possibly owe both royalties. If the third party wants to replicate the photo in a fair-use/derivative works arangement, then they may only need permission from the photographer. Just because game magazines don't go around suing everyone doesn't mean they can't. They have that right. Thanks. BcRIPster 09:25, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Quick comment. Without forming an opinion on the discussion, there doesn't seem to be a consensus to change the licensing template at this time; you may wish to pursue dispute resolution or head to the village pump or appropriate image policy talk pages (perhaps WP:FU?) so that such consensus can be achieved. Luna Santin 22:22, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

After consideration I have added the discussion entry at WP:FU . BcRIPster 21:54, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Encouraging fair-use rationale

I have proposed a wording change to our non-free image templates, and I'm trying to keep the discussion centralized here. Please join in the discussion. (ESkog)(Talk) 11:31, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Looking at the category...

Since the category the template uses, Category:Screenshots of video games, has a number of sub-cats, is it possible it add the same functionality that {{Non-free game cover}} has? That is, to allow the screenshots to be catted directly to the sub from the template in stead of having both the parent and sub.

Thanks for listening... - J Greb 16:40, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

For GPL game screenshots

You know like for The Battle for Wesnoth, that game is open-source, yet whenever they go to tag screenshots of games, they always go for the "non-free game screenshot" tag. Think maybe we could add one of those If this is a screenshot of free software (GPL, BSD, etc.) do not use this template! The aforementioned category has subcategories for each system, so as to make it easier to navigate and to clutter it up a lot less. Why not do the same thing for Category:Screenshots of video games? After all, there already are a few categories for certain consoles set up. N. Harmonik (talk) 17:06, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

I think we should create a template for freeware because this template has been used in images of free but copyrighted software (specially videogames).Marco94 (talk) 02:23, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Er...When editing the template, you captialized the 'V' in 'Video'. Because of that, practically all of the screenshots are in a nonexistent category: Category:Screenshots of Video games. N. Harmonik (talk) 20:40, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Fair-use rationale

Other templates, e.g. {{Non-free software screenshot}}, {{Non-free web screenshot}} include a more prominent (notice) reminder for the uploader to include a rationale. They also include a parameter to set when such a rationale is in place. While {{Video game rationale}} can be used to substitute parameters in the {{Non-free use rationale}}, it's not linked to in the reminder here in {{Non-free game screenshot}}. Is it reasonable to ask for this template be amended as follows?

  • Notice reminder to draw attention
  • Suggest use of {{Video game rationale}}
  • Addition of image has rationale parameter

Thanks for reading. -- Trevj (talk) 15:00, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, the change to this template made by SchuminWeb on November 19 was never discussed, and thus there was no consensus for it established. This makes it a Bold edit. I would like to take the next step in WP:BRD and Revert it, but I cannot, since I am not an admin. Therefore I request that an admin revert SchuminWeb's edit of November 19. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:56, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Done. See discussion at User talk:SchuminWeb#Changes in the wording of "Non-free" templates. — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 10:38, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Platform sort

So why do we sort by platform with this template? It appears wasteful as a category because the screenshots may not be consistently from the platform (e.g., games on multiple platforms). If they need to be sorted into smaller categories, I imagine sort by developer would make more sense (the actual author), if sort was necessary at all. czar 17:38, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 24 March 2016 - new logo, simplify wording

Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games has adopted a new project logo which can be seen at the top of this talk page. This edit request updates replaces an image derived from the old logo with the new logo, and separates the copyright symbol for clarity. I have also simplified the wording slightly, mirroring the text at Template:Non-free video game cover, but have not changed the meaning. I believe this edit request is uncontroversial. Replace the image parameter with the following

[[File:WPVG icon 2016.svg|40px|WikiProject Video games]]<br/><br/>[[File:Red copyright.svg|40px|Copyrighted content]]

Replace the text parameter with the following

This is a screenshot of a video game, and its copyright is most likely held by the game's publisher or developer. It is believed that the use of a limited number of low-resolution screenshots

  • for identification and critical commentary on
    • the video game in question or
    • the gameplay elements depicted on the screenshot in question
  • on the English Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,

constitutes fair use under United States copyright law. Other uses of this image may be copyright infringement. For more information, see Wikipedia:Non-free content.

Partly done: I replaced the image, but you will need to get a consensus before making substantial changes to the wording. Ahecht (TALK

Can somebody replace the WikiProject Videogames logo with File:Gamepad.svg? I consider use of the WPVG icon in stub/cleanup/copyright/etc. templates advertising (similiar to making {{asbox}} transclude a little icon that says "WikiProject Stub Sorting" with no parameter to turn it off). KATMAKROFAN (talk) 23:20, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. Izno (talk) 02:23, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
I had to revert edits from March because they were using stub templates to advertise a WikiProject. {{WPVG icon}} needs to be deprecated. KATMAKROFAN (talk) 03:14, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
How is a template holding an image an advertisement? The common user will not see the template phrase, only the image, which is functionally equivalent to the previous image. If you think the template should be deprecated, WP:TFD is -> that way. --Izno (talk) 03:16, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Nuvola looks better than boring/flat icons (except in some cases). KATMAKROFAN (talk) 03:56, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Ah, so now you're using a subjective rationale, which basically means you made a large number of fairly disruptive changes. I definitely do not think you had consensus for any of yesterday's changes... --Izno (talk) 11:42, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
I was being bold. How about continuing to use the flat logo for WPVG and the video-game portal, but using File:Gnome-input-gaming.svg for the stub, (non-Wikipedia-space) navigational sidebar, and copyright templates? KATMAKROFAN (talk) 14:51, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
WP:BOLD is not a defense of 50-some-odd edits without obvious consensus documented in a guideline or even the briefest of discussions with other users. See WP:BOLD#Be careful. I'm not here to negotiate with you, however; it's your job to find consensus, and that includes other editors. Your actions have also been questioned at WT:VG#Possible need for a mass revert, so that would be a good place to start. --Izno (talk) 11:37, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Cross-platform screenshots?

I wasn't sure where to bring this up so I apologize in advance if this isn't the proper place. For games that are cross-platform, like BatMUD and 3Kingdoms, what specific video game screenshot categories should their screenshots be placed in? N. Harmonik (talk) 18:22, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

The concept of a "platform-independent game" does per se not exist really, as for the two you listed, both require a PC and any Internet browser software, since it is playable online. For such cases, just use Category:Screenshots of browser games. Lordtobi () 18:26, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
Speaking of which, what are the differences between Category:Screenshots of browser games and Category:Screenshots of Flash games? I was under the impression that all browser games use Flash. N. Harmonik (talk) 18:42, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
Flash games are games that were created using Adobe Animate (formerly Adobe Flash), though a lot of games find themselves made in Unity (which uses the WebGL render for online applications), and HTML5 games as well as Java applets have been around for a long time. Flash is "just" one of the many things you can make games for your browser in. Lordtobi () 18:47, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
Where should screenshots of Roguelikes such as Brogue be placed? N. Harmonik (talk) 19:03, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
