Template talk:Non-free fair use/Archive 1
Wording
[edit]I guess the subtle distinction I've tried to make in reverting the change of "qualified" to "qualifies" is being missed, so I'll make it explicit. By adding this tag someone can only assert that the use of the image qualified as fair use at the time the tag was added. They can't assert (with any degree of assurance that they are correct) that the use of the image will always qualify as fair use. This is why I think we should use the term "qualified", not "qualifies". If someone disagrees with this, people give an explanation here. anthony 19:19, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- Other templates are more definitive. For example, Template:GFDL says "Permission is granted", not "The person who added this tag asserts that permission is granted". How about rephrasing this template as follows:
- This work is copyrighted and unlicensed. It does not fall into one of the blanket fair use categories listed at Wikipedia:Fair use#Images or Wikipedia:Fair use#Audio_clips. The use of this work in [[{{{1}}}]] qualifies as fair use of the material under United States copyright law. To the person adding the tag: Please provide a detailed rationale explaining why this use qualifies as fair use.
- The point being that if the use in the cited article actually isn't fair use, the tag should be removed anyway. dbenbenn | talk 15:18, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- No objections, so I made that change. dbenbenn | talk 08:54, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
To an admin who can edit this: I transplanted the current text into the new template named Fair use in2. Sample below:
This work is copyrighted (or assumed to be copyrighted) and unlicensed. It does not fall into one of the blanket acceptable non-free content categories listed at Wikipedia:Non-free content § Images or Wikipedia:Non-free content § Audio clips, and it is not covered by a more specific non-free content license listed at Category:Wikipedia non-free file copyright templates. However, it is believed that the use of this work:
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content and Wikipedia:Copyrights. | |||

- Done (I'm in the process of reformatting all of them, but I hadn't got around to this one yet). Thanks, JYolkowski // talk 23:23, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
Edit request
[edit]Could an admin fix this template to use |{{PAGENAME}} in the category so that it is in Category:Non-free image copyright tags in the right place, rather than under the T's? Thanks. BigDT 02:57, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- Done. —Ruud 00:48, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]{{Non-free fair use in2}}, {{Non-free fair use in3}}, {{Non-free fair use in4}}, and {{Non-free fair use in5}} survived a TfD. Original message moved from their talk pages (which have been redirected here):

Merge
[edit]All of the Non-free fair use in2, Non-free fair use in3, and so on should be merged into the {{Non-free fair use in}} template, in the same way that {{main articles}} was merged into {{main}}.
I am merging their talk pages to here. — Omegatron 13:28, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- Merging now, this tamplate can handle multiple parameters how so they are redundant (better late than never right ;)) --Sherool (talk) 21:07, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
No parameter?
[edit]Can someone with templatespace experience answer the following? Is it possible to have this template add the media it has been applied to into a deletion category if there is no parameter? That is, if someone adds {{Fair use in}} only, can we do something more useful than just rendering a broken field? Jkelly 01:10, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
- I figured out a way to make it add the image to Category:Orphaned fairuse images if no article names are given.
- Compare
- to
- or
- I will make this update on the real template if there are no objections. Superm401 - Talk 01:59, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

"To illustrate the object in question"
[edit]Could this line be replaced with "To illustrate the subject in question"? This is one of the reasons I thought "subject" would be better. Rosier 13:40, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Broken wikilinks
[edit]Should the wikilinks Wikipedia:Fair use#Images and Wikipedia:Fair use#Audio clips be changed to Wikipedia:Non-free content#Acceptable images and Wikipedia:Non-free content#Acceptable audio clips ? --Geniac 15:46, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
{{edit protected}} They're broken again... Jfire (talk) 16:22, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- Can you please give exact links? עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:12, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- It appears they've simply reverted to the former headings at Wikipedia:Fair use#Images and Wikipedia:Fair use#Audio clips. Or, to bypass the redirect, Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images and Wikipedia:Non-free content#Audio clips. Jfire (talk) 17:39, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Add images to fair use category
[edit]Images tagged with this template should be included in Category:Images with fair use claims to help verify fair use. Mikco (talk) 19:42, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
