Catalonia

[edit]

The template aims to group the different cuisines of the Mediterranean by country. If only part of that country is relevant it should be listed in brackets next to the country's cuisine. We either list Catalonia together with the rest of Spain's Autonoumous Communities or we delete them altogether. Like it or not, Catalonia forms part of the Spanish state. --Gibmetal 77talk 08:03, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't know we had decided to group everything by state. What does a cultural unit like catalonia have to do with a multi-national state, as regards cooking? Can you really argue there is a standard Spanish culture, as regards cooking? Why then does the Basque cuisine article exist then? Would you group English, Irish and Scottish culture together in this context? Is Austrian cookery as independent of German cookery as say, Italian? I don't want to put one over the other, but this idea creates the idea of second-class cultures. If we put them all on the same level, we let the user decide. On the otherhand, the fact that we seperate Wales from England in an article relating to culture should not offend, and in no way leeads people to think Wales is a seperate state. --Espencat (talk) 11:30, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is what you meant I suppose: {{{Template:Europe topic}}} - which covers the "sovereign nations". It does what you describe. This one - {{{Template:Cuisine}}} - although it's a bit to general, talks about regions. My suggestion is to talk about cultural units (usually called nationalities) all on the same level. This is possible because there aren't so many as to overburden it, and the Med is especially replete with these regional nationalities. A curiosity: Gibraltar falls within british cooking acording to the template at British cuisine, but here it is treated as a sovereign state... meanwhile, Arab cuisine covers many of the countries that follow thereafter. Since Arab cuisine is larger than the states mentioned, perhaps the states should go in brackets? --Espencat (talk) 11:51, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
After having read your reply I realise we probably could improve the grouping of the template, even though I might not agree with some of the examples you use to demonstrate your point. My suggestion now is to group them by categorising them further. i.e. Europe by state, Europe by culture, etc. This should make it clearer for the reader and easier to locate a particular cuisine within the template. I will edit the template accordingly to see how this looks. --Gibmetal 77talk 08:07, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think thats a reall good idea and an excelent compromise (evenif it does mean we might have to repeat a few nation-states. I suppose we may have to start by making a list of cultures (the states are obvious). ~It worries me though that some cultural limits are very debatable. Perhaps we should start with just the existing articles on stateless nations, and be generous with additions (after all, is Andalusia a cultural nation? etc...). BTW, I don't want to sound annoying, but I think you'd have to agree Andorran cuisine is Catalan cuisine, and therefore it deserves full-rank in both categories. --Espencat (talk) 09:32, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Portugal

[edit]

This template is a collection of the cuisines OF the Mediterranean and not Mediterranean cuisines. As Portugal does not border the Mediterranean Sea, it has no place in this template. --Gibmetal 77talk 06:26, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have to agree. That's why the Basque country and Andorra are not here, evenif the last one is arguable. We can just as well create a template for atlantic food. --Espencat (talk) 10:56, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also agree, I've removed Portugal. 90.193.39.145 (talk) 05:28, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

French cuisine

[edit]

Why is French cuisine labelled as "Occitanian" and "Corsican" in this template? Again with the French obsession to not being considered a Mediterranean country? Yes, of course not all French cuisine is Mediterranean, but since this template deals with countries it's pointless to have double standards for just ONE country. It's not like Spanish cuisine or Italian cuisine are completely mediterranean either. --93.45.237.3 (talk) 16:29, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greek vs Ottoman Cuisine

[edit]

Greek cuisine should not fall under Ottoman cuisine. It has been greatly influenced by it, not as much as Balkan cuisines of course but it is a regional cuisine of each own along with Spanish, Ottoman, Levantine, French, Egyptian, Italian, and Maghrebi. I suggest to remove it from the Ottoman section. Othon I (talk) 12:51, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
