The Navajo Nation consists of about 50%+ of McKinley County. As such, it is an important part of the life of McKinley County. I don't know why one would wish to exclude it from what is ultimately a see also reference for other places in McKinley County. "Tradition" (Not really a compact reservation of the type that we generally list on these templates) does not seem to be a sufficient reason for exclusion. Does anyone have another reason? --Bejnar (talk) 16:02, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a specific populated place or a minor civil division — as you can see, this template is for municipalities and communities, not massive semi-autonomous regions. Nyttend (talk) 16:05, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's funny, the template looks to me to be for places and things in McKinley County. Sure, populated places take the major place in most county templates, but I have seen such templates include sections that have attractions, lakes, landmarks, and a host of other things. Focus not on what you use the templates for, but on what would be useful for the broader range of readers. Speaking of large semi-autonomous regions, the Zuni are not just in McKinley County, but also in Arizona (Kołuwala:wa aka Zuni Heaven) and Catron County (Zuni Salt Lake aka Fence Lake). --Bejnar (talk) 16:32, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, you want something such as {{Gibson County, Indiana topics}} or {{Dakota County, Minnesota topics}}. Standard practice for everyone that's been involved with these templates is to restrict them to municipalities and communities: that's why the template says "Municipalities and communities of McKinley County, New Mexico". The solution that Nyttend suggests with embedded templates, might be necessary for highly populated counties, but is certainly unwieldy. (Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem "Entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity" --William of Occam) Plus having the supra template be "topics" rather than the straight name is certainly backwards. The better result would seem to be more like, Template:Chihuahua. Is there a place were this is discussed more generally? --Bejnar (talk) 18:48, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
