Speedy deletion
[edit]This template was just nominated for speedy deletion. It's not very different from other templates like Template:SOWL. It inserts a reference to the most commonly used Sanskrit dictionary. It's going to be useful for the thousands of India-related articles that include claims about meanings of various Sanskrit words. I've started to slowly take avail of it when cleaning up articles on given names. Uanfala (talk) 18:45, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
Cite book?
[edit]Jonesey95, why is there a need to be changing from {{cite encyclopedia}} to {{cite book}}? I also don't understand why |chapter-url=
was removed. – Uanfala (talk) 17:13, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- A change in the CS1 citation module code was making red error messages appear when there was no article title. {{cite book}} functions just fine with only a book title, and also with a chapter title if one is offered. As for
|chapter-url=
, it was mapped to the article name, and I thought it would not work after my change. I was wrong. I have restored it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:56, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
URL
[edit]The default URL for this doesn't seem very helpful. Ideally this template would link a reader directly to the relevant entry or page of the dictionary, but Koeln.de doesn't provide a way to do so (as far as I know). For example, sanskritdictionary
- Koeln.de provides a "Cologne record id" for each entry, but I've not found a way to link to an entry from that id. Maybe there is a way, but I've not figured out what it is.
- The closest thing to directly linking an entry seems to be linking to the relevant scanned page that has the entry, which definitely is possible through Koeln.de and in-fact isn't an option with those other two sites I linked (above). It seems to be as simple as appending the page number to the end of:
https://www.sanskrit-lexicon.uni-koeln.de/scans/csl-apidev/servepdf.php?dict=MW&page=
- Incorporating a link to the page in some way would certainly be helpful if specific entries can't be linked, particularly as the template already accepts
|page=
. Taking the page for the URL straight from|page=
might not be the best way to implement it though, at least not indiscriminately, in-case a range of pages is specified (which would break the URL). – Scyrme (talk) 19:06, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
