Official?

What makes these official national symbols? Some of them are obvious, like the flag and national anthem, but what makes Mt. Rushmore or the Statue of Liberty an official national symbol, as opposed to, say, the Capitol or Golden Gate Bridge? And I would think the military songs might be official to each branch, but are they "national"? Yankee Doodle is official in Connecticut, according to the article, but I see nothing about national.
