Dialects
[edit]@DankJae I didn't realise that Gwenhwyseg page existed and wasn't aware of the term, well done on finding the dialect pages. I think these template boxes actually help readers to get a good overview of available and related pages and I have come across new pages as a result. Titus Gold (talk) 23:52, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Template focus
[edit]Reviewing all other language templates this one does kinda drift off, with specific details of the languages. The standard of "Languages of" templates is to simply list languages (few cases dialects too) in a country, see {{Languages of Ireland}} as an close example. Therefore just "Welsh", "English", "BSL" and "Welsh Romani" (latter article states it is extinct?). There are pre-existing {{Languages of the United Kingdom}}, {{Welsh language}} and {{English dialects by continent}} for all the links already present here. So fully not sure if the template is really needed. I did expand this template, giving it a chance, but not fully sure.
I believe at a minimum, the Welsh and English sections be removed, they have their own templates. Dialects unsure. Some others do have them, but most not. DankJae 00:13, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- Go ahead with what you think is appropriate here. Titus Gold (talk) 13:45, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- Agree it needs pulling back. I have a bit of a problem with such templates in any case, because Wales has many more languages than these, but in any case the template should be more focussed. Sirfurboyđ (talk) 18:07, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- I am open for the addition of like minority/immigrant languages? The infobox on Languages of Wales lists Arabic and Polish (based on 2021 census) so they could be added? DankJae 20:23, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- Trimmed it to fit my comment at the very top. DankJae 20:35, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Titus Gold, stop replacing {{Languages of the United Kingdom}} with this template, if that is your main reason to make this template, I believe this template is less necessary and seems motivated in some way. DankJae 13:27, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
- "Languages of Wales" is obviously the most appropriate template for the page "Welsh Language". I have no problem with the inclusion of both the Wales and UK templates if you want both included. Titus Gold (talk) 16:22, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
- Not sure why it is "obviously" the most appropriate. It seems to me that most languages templates are for the state, which is the United Kingdom. There is a logic to this, because when you hone in on regions or home nations, the number of languages simply becomes a subset of those for the state. Much as we might want Welsh articles/templates/lists and categories for everyone, someone from outside Wales is much more likely to want to know that Welsh is a language of the United Kingdom than that Welsh is a language of Wales (which seems tautologous). This is a case where the state wide aggregation simply makes more sense. It also allows them to see the Celtic languages listed together in the template, which is more likely to meet someone's information need if they are learning about Celtic languages. At least, that is what is obvious to me - but perhaps there is something I have missed? Sirfurboyđ (talk) 22:11, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
