Template talk:Infobox national sports federations

Consensus?

This infobox (created on 29 February 2012‎), is absolutly out of standard: it's too long, too large, too much information and does not meet the requirements on this page, is written that he should have the consent of the community before being created. but there does not appear that the proposal has been made​​ here. Is also used loosely to in the article International Sailing Federation, that is an "International Governing Body", that like all the IGB of this category, need to use this Template:Infobox Organization, at least but not the last, of course the ISAF is not a "national sports federation". --Kasper2006 (talk) 15:38, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

I created the template because I wanted a standard layout of sport federations that tied into the sport, national olympic committee and some basic information. In most sports this is created by wording that varies in format widely. The template is long but I suspect no one will use every field I welcome other user comments. How do you ask the community the only way I am aware is to create something and get feedback if it is a general thing? Yes there are sport specific conversation but this is a general infobox. Perhaps I will learn from this conversation I am keen to work with other. All I see is this template being an improvement but I am bias :-) Yachty4000 (talk) 17:23, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

One should ask for comments before implementing an infobox. Seeing how it is on alot of sailing articles, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sailing would have been a good place to start. If ever doing something that will affect alot of pages, like an infobox, ask for comments first. Infoboxes also need to conform to standards. For example, there will be a new "database" in the next year that all the different language Wikis will use. Instead of each of the different language Wikis having to enter the same info into each of their infoboxes, the data will be kept in one spot. Alot of work over the past couple of years has gone into standardizing infoboxes and removing as many of the specific ones as possible. Bgwhite (talk) 07:26, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Objections to the template

You don't have absolutely the gift of simplification. ;-) You should take a cue from Template: Infobox Organization.

1. First column: max two words for the concept, not a phrase;
2. First column: must be small characters in bold, but not in italics;
3. Flaf is too big;
4. The information on the governing bodies are in the body of the article, only the most importanto two or three in the infobox;
5. The image (logo) does not start with a thumb, but they need to centered (as 100% of the other templates) and unframed.

All this (and more), brings the fact that the template is absolutely non-standard: too long, too wide, too much information. Regardless of the fact that no consensus. --Kasper2006 (talk) 07:00, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

The template isn't fixed and I am not a programmer there are things in it I would like to change. Here is an example page of it being used for other users to comment on Royal Yachting Association it is designed for purpose there are well 1000's of national sport federations. Almost every sport has over 100 national federations. To be honest the coding is a copy "Infobox Organization"

The wording could be changes infact I have some suggestion on this.

The italics could be removed the reason for the bold is to break it down into sections if I was clever this could be done with lines or merging the two colums so the section titles appear centralised.

There not that big it would be a quick change to reduce the size but I have since seen a wikipedia procedure suggesting not to use them in infoboxes

This is the point of the box the difference in wording and the fact some mention the country, National

Just because you're not a programmer and you wanted to do it better, you had to go by the suggestions and assistance from the community before putting it online. Worse before using it. Given that you've been attempting to get the template deleted for over a month, you've certainly had time to learn. You certainly shouldn't have spent that month disparaging the author's technical abilities, nor making specious comments about requiring consensus in advance (which has never been the Wikipedia way). Now, if you want to provide suggestions on further improvements to the template, feel free. I'll be rewriting it to use {{infobox}} shortly, after which the code should be significantly easier for less technically-minded editors to maintain. Coorect. But remember that the author use template whose name is "national sports federations" in International Sailing Federation that is an "international sports federations". Also when I tried to point this out to him, I had the "revert" in response. --Kasper2006 (talk) 13:26, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

I feel a need say something here Kasper I no nothing about coding I learn't building this template hence why there so many edits. It copies coding from elsewhere this was my first mistake as I should have used "hlist". In regards to the revert you deleted the template which incidental works fine for international federations, without making any effort to include the information you removed from the page. You are also fully aware of the amount of work I have put into sailing inparticular and could have discussed the change. Or even better waited for this discussion to end.
