Demonym
Hey, do you think we could get an entry for demonym within demographics? eg people from Paris are Parisiens, people from Île-de-Sein are called Sénans, etc. Some of them are kind of wacky: people from Wy-dit-Joli-Village = Vicusiens. The French-language commune infobox has it and I think it's useful - in the English articles on communes, I've noticed it mentioned inconsistently in the Demographics section.. Thanks! Wikimandia (talk) 04:07, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- It's already available, as
|population_demonym=
. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:47, 25 January 2015 (UTC)- Well,
include that in the commentary.[Done for you.] - Better yet, include
|demonym=
or just replace the needlessly redundant redundancy of|population_demonym=
with the correct, terser term so people can actually find it. - Best, include
|En_demonym=
and|Fr_demonym=
, because the people from Paris are not Parisiens in English. They're Parisians. They can display together as "Demonym". Just have a line break and a nonwrapping space before the gloss:Demonym: Parisian (en)<br>Parisien(ne) (fr)
- — LlywelynII 01:24, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- Also note that currently you treat most of the terms without underscores:
Native name =
instead ofnative_name =
but that treating "population_demonym" that way breaks the syntax and causes nothing to be displayed. — LlywelynII 01:41, 1 March 2015 (UTC)- @LlywelynII:There is no "you"; just "we". HTH. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:06, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
- Well,
Metropolis of Lyon
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
The new "territorial collectivity" the Metropolis of Lyon has recently been broken off of the Rhône department. It has essentially the same administrative status as a department. This template needs to be updated to reflect this change. The problem, however, is that the departmental code is currently the same for the Metropolis as it is for Rhône, so the current system of determining department using the INSEE code will not work in this case. Centre-Val de Loire and Metropolis of Lyon
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
Two changes w.r.t. local administration: the region Centre has been renamed Centre-Val de Loire per 16 January 2015, and the Metropolis of Lyon has been formed per 1 January 2015, as already mentioned above. I made the following changes in the sandbox, please copy them to the main infobox:
|18|28|36|37|41|45 = Centre
- should be
|18|28|36|37|41|45 = Centre-Val de Loire
And these lines should be added between the list of departments and the part about the arrondissements:
| subdivision_type2 = {{ {}#switch: {INSEE} |69003 |69029 |69033 |69034 |69040 |69044 |69046 |69063 |69068 |69069 |69071 |69072 |69081 |69085 |69087 |69088 |69089 |69091 |69096 |69100 |69116 |69117 |69123 |69127 |69142 |69143 |69149 |69152 |69153 |69163 |69168 |69191 |69194 |69199 |69202 |69204 |69205 |69207 |69233 |69244 |69250 |69256 |69259 |69260 |69266 |69271 |69273 |69275 |69276 |69278 |69279 |69282 |69283 |69284 |69286 |69290 |69292 |69293 |69296 = Metropolis }} | subdivision_name2 = {{ {}#switch: {INSEE} |69003 |69029 |69033 |69034 |69040 |69044 |69046 |69063 |69068 |69069 |69071 |69072 |69081 |69085 |69087 |69088 |69089 |69091 |69096 |69100 |69116 |69117 |69123 |69127 |69142 |69143 |69149 |69152 |69153 |69163 |69168 |69191 |69194 |69199 |69202 |69204 |69205 |69207 |69233 |69244 |69250 |69256 |69259 |69260 |69266 |69271 |69273 |69275 |69276 |69278 |69279 |69282 |69283 |69284 |69286 |69290 |69292 |69293 |69296 = Metropolis of Lyon }}

- That is strange, even though I had tested it in the sandbox, the infobox doesn't work as it should: departments aren't shown anymore. I don't understand why, but I think I found a workaround: nested switches. I just tested it in the sandbox, and it works fine there but apparently that's no guarantee for success. So the whole "subdivision2" section needs to be replaced. Markussep Talk 07:59, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Markussep: It's difficult to follow what you want when there are changes in the sandbox and also huge code blobs in the talk page. Are they the same? I can't tell. - @Rob984: I'm wondering about the consistency here. Timezone1 uses "time zone", but timezone1_DST uses "timezone". Similarly, timezone1 uses spaces while the others use underscores. --Ahecht (TALK

@Rob984: I notice that the code at Infobox French region is a little more elaborate than what's been suggested.
| timezone1 = {{#if:{} |{timezone1}|CET}} | utc_offset1 = {{#if:{} |{}|+1}} | timezone1_DST = {{#if:{} ||CEST}} | utc_offset1_DST = {{#if:{} ||+2}}
What are your thoughts on this for consistency sake? — Andy W. (talk · ctb) 17:57, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
- Only problem is, if there are communes outside of metropolitan France which do not have a spcified time zone already, CET will be shown. At the momment, timezone1 isn't specified for any communes, but I assume you would leave "time zone" as a fall back. Are there a lot of communes outside of metropolitan France? As I think they would have to be checked. Rob984 (talk) 20:18, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Rob984: Makes sense. I checked Infobox settlement usage by other templates. Most leave it blank or don't offer customization. If we want to pipe new params, I suggest
|timezone=
,|utc_offset=
,|timezone_DST=
, and|utc_offset_DST=
, with underscores. (Off topic: I think Infobox French region could have left off the "1" suffixes, but definitely don't change them because it'll break pages) — Andy W. (talk · ctb) 21:04, 9 June 2016 (UTC)- We can base the timezone off of the first two digits of the INSEE code, as is done elsewhere in the template:
- @Rob984: Makes sense. I checked Infobox settlement usage by other templates. Most leave it blank or don't offer customization. If we want to pipe new params, I suggest
| timezone1 = {{#if:{{{timezone|{}}}}|{{{timezone|{time zone}}}}|{{ {}#switch: {{str left|{99}|2}} |97|98|99 = |#default = CET}}}} | utc_offset1 = {{#if:{{{utc_offset|{}}}}|{{{utc_offset|{utc offset}}}}|{{ {}#switch: {{str left|{99}|2}} |97|98|99 = |#default = +1}}}} | timezone1_DST = {{#if:{{{timezone_DST|{}}}}|{{{timezone_DST{time zone DST}}}}|{{ {}#switch: {{str left|{99}|2}} |97|98|99 = |#default = CEST}}}} | utc_offset1_DST = {{#if:{{{utc_offset_DST|{}}}}|{{{utc_offset_DST{utc offset DST}}}}|{{ {}#switch: {{str left|{99}|2}} |97|98|99 = |#default = +2}}}}
- Clever idea. I notice the use of underscores and spaces for parameter names is slightly inconsistent throughout the template (for example "flag_link" and "image flag size"). Most parameter names use spaces, which means we are not currently matching the parameter names used for Infobox Settlement, but that isn't a problem I don't think. So I reckon sticking with spaces, rather than underscores, is preferred (such as in documentation). And I advise changing any parameter names like "flag_link" to spaces (with fall back of course). Rob984 (talk) 12:37, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

Could this template please be updated to reflect the new names of the French regions? As you may know, some of the regions changed names, and some now have different territories as well as new names. The names of the pre-2016 regions are still displaying in infoboxes. For an example, see Roubaix: the region name shown with the map is Nord-Pas-de-Calais, but that region combined into the new region of Hauts-de-France. I'd appreciate a ping with any reply. Location maps for the new regions are available now. Therefore the subtemplate has to be replaced with the version in the . I also made the maps slightly narrower (from 270 to 264 pixels) so they fit the infobox better. Markussep Talk 12:58, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Density calculation
I am wondering why the density calculation is so imprecise. Take for instance Embrun, Hautes-Alpes. For a population of 6,123 inhabitants and an area of 36.39 km2 the given density is 170 i/km2, instead of 168 i/km2. How come? Carlotm (talk) 10:54, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
- infobox settlement uses a precision of 2 digits for the population density. Frietjes (talk) 17:01, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
INSEE link
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
The French statistics office INSEE completely revised its website, and as a consequence the automatic link in this infobox to the statistical data sheet of the commune (for instance http://www.insee.fr/fr/themes/tableau_local.asp?ref_id=POP&millesime=2010&nivgeo=COM&codgeo=13101) doesn't work anymore. IMO the best alternative is https://www.insee.fr/fr/statistiques/1405599?geo=COM-13101. So the code line
- | postal_code = {{ safesubst:#if:{{{insee|{}}}} | {{{insee|{INSEE}}}} / }}{}
should become
- | postal_code = {{ safesubst:#if:{{{insee|{}}}} | {{{insee|{INSEE}}}} / }}{}
I've tested it in the sandbox, and it works for most communes, unfortunately not for Mayotte, New Caledonia, French Polynesia and some other overseas territories (but the current link does not work for them either). Markussep Talk 10:57, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- Done I just copied the one line over; I didn't swap out the whole revised version in the sandbox. It seems to have worked. And we can't help it if they continue to handle their overseas possessions poorly... StevenJ81 (talk) 16:38, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
Warnings of "unknown parameters"
Greetings and felicitations. When editing the Lieudieu article, the following are displayed:
Warning: Page using Template:Infobox French commune with unknown parameter "department" (this message is shown only in preview).
Warning: Page using Template:Infobox French commune with unknown parameter "region" (this message is shown only in preview).
This despite the fact that those fields are displayed in the infobox. Would someone please be so kind as to diagnose and fix the problem(s)? —DocWatson42 (talk) 07:24, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- @DocWatson42: The template documentation says those parameters are deprecated, and the template code works them out for itself by looking at the INSEE code. So these warnings are correct, and the parameters can be removed from the article. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:49, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Please replace:
{{Location map|France Bretagne|lat={48}|long={-3}|label={map dot label}|marksize=6|float=center|width=264|border=none|caption=}}
with{{Location map|France Bretagne|coordinates={}|label={map dot label}|marksize=6|float=center|width=264|border=none|caption=}}
to fix the fact that every Breton place (e.g. Ushant) is apparently located in the center of Brittany per the dropdown map in the infobox. It looks like Frietjes missed one in this edit. Storkk (talk) 15:59, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

Please implement a population footnotes field for citations
Basically the same as area footnotes. See Paris. So that instead of:
We can have:
Also for area footnotes, could the preceding space be removed? Eg:
- Area1 [1]
to
- Area1[1]

Template edits 2018-03-12
- I have added
|department=
and|region=
to the whitelist of Module:Check for unknown parameters. The two values are automatically derived by INSEE, so their presence is idle. But it appears that they are present in 22.000 articles each, filling up Category:Pages using infobox French commune with unknown parameters (0) (was 23,228). - I have added
|demonym=
as synonym next to parameter|population demonym=
(it now shows). Today|demonym=
is present in 1400 articles, so this is the easy way. - I have removed parameter
|km²=
(unused; synonym for|area_km2=
). I think it not a good idea to introduce an off-character, while we do not use that anywhere else (we don't create parameter|area_km²=
). - I've updated TemplateData, also to improve the monthly report.
- And this remarkable note: when previewing the live template without the <includeonly> tag (test for typo's and uneven brackets etc.), I saw an error message from the expr: caculator (plus two in the infobox showing). Clewarly no harm in mainspace, but maybe it better be prevented not ignored.
Time zone & UTC DST not working

Infobox French commune/Archive 3 | |

Time zone | UTC+01:00 (CET) |

The template emits erroneous output if parameters |time zone DST=
and |utc offset DST=
are used. I suspect an OR pipe is missing between the 4th and the 5th sets of brackets in the treatment of those parameters. Further, the defaults for |utc offset=
and |utc offset DST=
ought to be "+01:00" and "+02:00" (sans quotes), respectively, not "+1" and "+2". -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 12:51, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Please replace the current version of the infobox with the current sandbox version. This will add the possibility to use this infobox for settlements that are part of a commune, including former communes. It adds a caption and line showing wich commune it is part of, and hides the INSEE code (but uses the INSEE code, or the department code instead, to get the correct region, department and map). See test case 6 for a demonstration of this new functionality. This edit changes
- | settlement_type = {}
into:
- | settlement_type = {{ safesubst:#if: {} | {part} of {{Link if exists|{commune} }} | {} }}
and
- | postal_code_type = INSEE/Postal code
- | postal_code = {{ safesubst:#if:{{{insee|{}}}} | {{{insee|{INSEE}}}} / }}{}
into:
- | postal_code_type = {{ safesubst:#if: {} | Postal code | INSEE/Postal code }}
- | postal_code = {{ safesubst:#if: {} | {} | {{ safesubst:#if:{{{insee|{}}}} | {{{insee|{INSEE}}}} / }}{} }}
and adds:
- | subdivision_type6 = {{ safesubst:#if: {} | Commune }}
- | subdivision_name6 = {commune}
The field "type" can be used to describe the status of the settlement, for instance "commune déléguée". It defaults to "part". Markussep Talk 10:24, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Polynesia: specific parameters?
I have cleaned up the tracking tracking category. The 40 or so pages left have these two parameters, so far unknown in the template: |administrative subdivision=
and |commune center=
. See for example Hiva-Oa.
They seem to be specific for French Polynesia communes.
|administrative subdivision=
See French Polynesia#Administrative divisions. Looks like a formal administrative layer (one above the commune) in F.P. So should it be added?
|commune center=
looks like the actual village or town. To add?
I am not an expert in this, so I leave it. pls ping me if you want further contact. - DePiep (talk) 10:24, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
- You're right @DePiep:, there are five official administrative subdivisions in French Polynesia. I found some references and added them to the Administrative divisions of French Polynesia article. I think it's good to add them to the infobox, similar to the
|province=
parameter for New Caledonia. I'm not sure we need the|commune center=
. Markussep Talk 14:06, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
- At the moment I can not strive to add this parameter. Hope you can find someone else who can help you? -DePiep (talk) 14:25, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
- No problem, I think I can do it myself. Markussep Talk 15:03, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
