Why does this template include schools outside of the Houston city limits?
[edit]- Many areas with "Houston, Texas" mailing addresses are mistakenly thought to be within the Houston city limits (they are in fact unincorporated areas) and so a layperson may expect to see the schools in this list
- Many areas are "culturally" a part of Houston. John Nova Lomax of the Houston Press stated in this article:
- "That church is a reminder of the fact that at one time, Houston and Harris County were two distinct entities in reality as well as law. Yes, today there are unincorporated swaths of Harris County, and numerous municipalities not named Houston, but the fact remains that they have been swallowed by the behemoth. Even such enclaves as Bellaire and West U, with their own city halls and police forces, are little more than glorified neighborhoods."
- Many schools located outside of the Houston city limits have portions of Houston within their attendance boundaries (in Texas school districts have boundaries which cross city and county boundaries, so therefore attendance zones of schools can and do cross city and county boundaries), and some schools outside of the Houston city limits, such as Bellaire High School, have the majority of their boundaries within the Houston city limits (Compare to a map of Bellaire city)
- Some school districts have a majority of their area within the Houston city limits (Houston ISD, Spring Branch ISD) and/or also within unincorporated areas with Houston addresses (Aldine ISD and Alief ISD). People would expect to see all of the schools from those districts on this list

How to tell if a school outside of Houston serves Houston
[edit]Check the school district high school attendance boundary and match it with the map of the "full service" Houston city limits. If it matches, the school serves Houston and can be listed. You may use the same map to determine if the school falls in the Houston city limits.
Some districts, such as Huffman ISD, only have one high school.
Alief ISD has multiple high schools but "zoned" high schools are determined by lottery, so a student may be sent to any of its three neighborhood high schools regardless of his or her location (as long as he/she is an Alief ISD resident). Since most of its city limits are in Houston anyway (I think 1/3rd of its area is unincorporated) I simply listed Kerr High School (a magnet school of choice outside of the Houston city limits) WhisperToMe (talk) 10:00, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
