German vs Polish names
[edit]Re: [1]. About a third of the covered timespace (...) belongs to entity where Polish, not German, was an official language. It is not that I have a problem with German names in this context, they are useful. But the revert summary was not totally correct. I'd suggest adding Polish names (in smaller font/parenthesis) and other local names (like the Ukrainian Lviv) to avoid any confusion. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 21:46, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, the guidelines do state specifically that if an English name exists it should be used. So Krakow should either be Krakow (one English name) or Cracow (archaic English name). It should not be "Krakau". Additionally I don't think that 'Zamosch' is actually German - the closest is that it may be a Yiddish transliteration of the Polish "Zamosc", so that doesn't really make sense either. So really it should be the other way: "Zamosc (Zamosch)" etc.Volunteer Marek (talk) 22:24, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- I tend not to believe there is any reason to use archaic names. I wonder if WP:NCGN and Talk:Gdansk/Vote come into play here? Overall, I'd support your solution (plus diacritics, of course). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 22:35, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
