Anne of Bretagne was a very intelligent and powerful woman with a status far beyond the normes for women in the Middle Ages.
Whilst it is not unusual for childbirth to have been hazardous, and many children to have died in infancy, for a woman to have
fourteen pregnancies of which only two survived past infancy could pose the question whether there were someone in her employ
who had the remit not to allow her to have a living heir to the title of Duke or Duchess of Brittany. Who would this benefit?
The French Crown. Why should an educated, intelligent and powerful woman such as she not be able to bear healthy children?
Perhaps we will not have the oportunity to discover if there was a plot to disempower her heritors - in the event, her daughter
Renée who lived to old age was 'neutralised' by her marriage. This is why Anne was conceived of as the last of her kind. It is also
perhaps why the present French Government does not wish for Nantes (Loire) to become a part of the Breton region in the reorganisation
of administrative regions of France. Jane L Johnson (talk) 07:56, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
