Parameter to ignore millennium category

[edit]

Can we add a parameter to ignore the millennium category in this template? There's a pretty extensive CFD discussion about places that shouldn't need a red-linked or blue-linked useless millennium category and substituting and removing manually is just hideous. I mean, I could just do it all manually or without tables but I'd like to ask if this template and Template:DisestcatCountryCentury could allow for it to be skipped. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 21:25, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Done and documented! Is this [1] easy enough?
Alternatively, or additionally, I could make the millennium category only appear on the century categories if it exists. So, once the millennium category is deleted, the redlink for it would disappear from the bottom of the century category pages. They might need a null edit to make that happen, though. I have a preference for the first way I have done it – so that the millennium category will appear on the century page if the parameter is used. – Fayenatic London 21:59, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This is good enough. Wikipedia:Database reports/Categories categorized in red-linked categories has plenty more that don't exist, some that should, many that don't. Can the same be done for Template talk:DisestcatCountryCentury? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 22:33, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Suppressing decades

[edit]

This template currently contain a parameter (|decades=yes) that allows the display of individual years to be suppressed and displays individual decades instead. There are cases, however, where there is not enough content to justify any decade splits, such as Category:11th-century establishments in Sri Lanka. In these cases, what is the preferred approach:

  • Continue using this template, and add a parameter to suppress the display of individual decades; or
  • Remove this template from the category and use {{CatPair}} instead?

The same issue applies to {{DisestcatCountryCentury}}, and I've left a note at that template's talk page pointing to this thread. Pinging User:Fayenatic london and User:Marcocapelle as active editors in this area. -- Black Falcon (talk) 19:09, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

IMHO this template is still better than CatPair because of the parent categories that it generates. I intend to have a go at revising it further. Probably not until next week, though. – Fayenatic London 20:57, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, then, and thanks. -- Black Falcon (talk) 02:41, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done – that was simpler than I thought! Just append |no-table=yes . – Fayenatic London 11:58, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for adding this to the code and updating the documentation! Cheers, -- Black Falcon (talk) 04:10, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Categories that have individually tailored versions of this template

[edit]

These categories have individually tailored versions of this template, which would need manual updating. The tailored versions include only the years for which the country was known by that name.

Cases using tailored templates, i.e. non-standard Template pages that are (potentially) used on multiple category pages:

@Fayenatic london: would it be possible (and easy) to add two optional parameters, "startyear" and "endyear", to this template? E.g. for the Belgium cat above, one would just need to add "Startyear=1830", and the end result would be the same as what the complicated tailored template achieves? Fram (talk) 10:11, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Fram: Some of the templates do more than that, linking to other names for other periods, e.g. see DR Congo. Meanwhile, user:BrownHairedGirl has more detailed plans for wholesale revision of these templates. I'm just doing some minor updates on presentation. – Fayenatic London 10:24, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks! Fram (talk) 10:27, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:20th-century establishments in Thailand no longer has an individually tailored template, but uses {{EstcatCountryCentury/resolve}} which resolves category redirects on all decade and year links. However, this requires setting up redirect pages using the new name for all dates before the name change. – Fayenatic London 21:22, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
