Edgware
[edit]The sign at Highgate upper level shows that the through service to Bushey Heath would have been from the Highgate side only. Map has been adjusted to suit. Given that the present Edgware tube station isn't where the tube station was then ((but is, iirc, where the train station was, hence the sidings on the old route towards Mill Hill (The Hale) then this would seem verified on the ground. --AlisonW (talk) 13:08, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Alison, sorry to revert you but the above is completely wrong for several reasons:
- The tube station is exactly where it has always been since it opened in 1924. The old LNER station was to the south where the shopping centre now is. The 1930s map here (included in the article) shows the location of the two stations. The bridge here is the one by which the LNER line crossed the tube route.
- The enamelled platform map shows the original intended routing of the extension, however, this does not mean that the LNER station was to be kept. What would have happened was that the existing station was kept much as it was, with two new platforms built on the south-west to take the diverted LNER tracks. From here a short pair of tunnels was to be driven under Station road and then on to the new route to Brockley Hill. Under this plan, passengers coming north from the Colindale or Hendon would have changed trains to continue north - but the station design was subsequently revised (several times) so that trains from either route could run to Bushey. Clive's Underground Line Guide, Northern Line, History, 5 - The Northern Heights Extensions gives details of the routes planned.
- The depot at Edgware was opened at the same time as the original station. It can be seen in the aerial photo of 1926 from the London Transport Museum collection which is linked to from the Edgware tube station article.
- fairynuf. Can't argue with the founder of the Daleks! ;-P --AlisonW (talk) 21:01, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
