Nonbreaking space
[edit]This edit put a nonbreaking space after the extinction †. The consequence was that in a taxobox like that at Saturnalia (dinosaur), there was no space between the dagger and the taxon name for the first four extinct ranks, but there was for the species. I've restored the original version, which shows all ranks in an automated taxobox consistently. Peter coxhead (talk) 13:28, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

Template:Don't edit this line dagger has been listed at Templates for discussion (nomination), but it was protected, so it could not be tagged. Please add:
{{subst:template for discussion|help=off}}
to the top of the page to complete the nomination. Thank you. Q28 (talk) 05:16, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- As this template (if used) adds "†" inside a taxobox, it should not display any message in those taxoboxes. So I don't think it's a good idea to do what is requested. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:13, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- To editors Q28 and Peter coxhead: wasn't sure how to proceed with this, so I probably screwed up somehow. The entire subst. TfD template was enclosed in noinclude tags which, upon substitution, seems to have resulted in redundant no-inclusion. Should keep any superfluous text from intruding on taxobox daggers. Let me know if anything is broken. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 00:56, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
- A little more digging shows that the
|type=disabled
parameter of the TfD template should squelch text, and it appears to have done so in the example on the TfD page. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 01:16, 18 December 2021 (UTC) - Note: members of WikiProject Tree of Life have been notified of this TfD. Editors should feel free to notify other editors at various other venues where appropriate, since there is no notification within template {{Taxonomy}}. P.I. - @Paine Ellsworth: yes, seems ok as it is now. Unfortunately, Q28 hasn't replied at the nomination, so it's still not clear to me why the nomination was made. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:19, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
- From the history at WP:TFD, it appears Q28 is systematically nominating all templates that do not have transclusions, as targets for deletion. -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 00:03, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Closed as keep; TfD template removed by editor Izno. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 20:29, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Peter coxhead: In response to the comments in the now closed nomination, I did not mean to imply anything needed "fixing". I was just trying to explain how the system worked to some extent (and thus the value of the item nominated) and some possible alternative implementations that might simply things and thus improve maintainability (with the possibility of how to get rid of the parts of system in question as that is what the nomination called into question). —Uzume (talk) 15:54, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
MediaWiki not reporting transclusions
[edit]“ | The "Don't edit this line XXX" templates are a core part of the automated taxobox system, and so high use, but as of January 2019, the tool did not count their transclusions, as they are only used from Lua. | ” |
Can someone create a generic warning template for this, and use it across all the documentation pages for templates so affected ? (including any that aren't taxobox/Don't edit this line templates) Ideally it would implement the functinoality of {{transclusionless}} to categorize the templates into the reporting categories for bots to ignore its lack of transclusions. -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 00:07, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
- @65.92.246.142: I believe all of them already use
{{Don't edit this line/doc/variant}}
for their documentation and thus are already using{{transclusionless}}
(added by you). —Uzume (talk) 15:59, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
