Change to proper title?
[edit]Should this be Director of Central Intelligence and exclude Hayden? ObiterDicta ( pleadings • errata • appeals ) 22:42, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
- (meet you again here) No, this includes all directors of the CIA as it initially means. @pple 10:32, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- Other concerns: why don't we write their names in full? Moreover, should we also add acting DCIs? For example, McLaughlin should be in this list? @pple 10:39, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- (We've met before?) Anyway, they are two separate jobs. The DCI (who also ran the CIA) had broader responsibilities, even though he was colloquially referred to as the CIA Director, but that was never his actual title. That job was abolished by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. The Act established the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, which is the job Hayden holds. (Goss held each position: before the Act he was DCI, after it he was CIA director.) I think it is important to be precise about these things.
- Our articles in general seem to be rather sloppy in making this distinction. ObiterDicta ( pleadings • errata • appeals ) 11:31, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- (Yes, more than once) Understand your point. However, I think this category creator's main purpose was to list all people who took control over CIA, both DCIs and DCIAs even though the title Director of the CIA has only been given to Goss and Hayden so far. Instead of excluding Hayden, why don't we change to Directors of Central Intelligence and Directors of the Central Intelligence Agency for title and mark Goss with bold letters to make a distinction? Like this:

- And come back to my further concerns. I don't like the way of listing only their family names. And what about John E. McLaughlin? Should he be listed here, too (though his tenure just lasted 2 months)? @pple 14:24, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Goss both DCI and then D/CIA
[edit]Is there a simple way to show Porter Goss was confirmed as DCI but resigned as D/CIA? I.e., he had both jobs – first DCI, and briefly D/CIA.
He was confirmed as Director of Central Intelligence Statement on the Confirmation of Porter Goss as DCI on September 23, 2004, but resigned as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Statement by CIA Director Porter Goss May 5, 2006.
Is there a simple way to reflect that here? Maybe he should appear here as DCI, since he quit shortly after the DNI position supplanted DCI.

John McLaughlin acting DCI
[edit]John E. McLaughlin was Deputy DCI and for a time acting DCI; he was not a U.S. Senate confirmed DCI. He is a good man, but properly left off this list.
