Change in template function
[edit]Any opposition if I transition us to a centralized template, as shown at {{Current iPadOS/sandbox}}? This new form would use {{Current iPadOS|short}}
and the new {{Current iPadOS|shortlinked}}
{{Current iPadOS|date}}
to return:
- iPadOS 18.1
- iPadOS 18.1
- October 28, 2024
This would allow our beloved updaters to make a single edit to a single template, while adding potential for more variations in which data is returned, so that we can use the latest version number (linked and unlinked) and then the date in a separate column in tables like at IPad#Hardware.
In case anyone is worried, all will continue to function normally as we transition all uses of {{Current iPadOS/short}} to the new form, but that template would eventually be deleted. — HTGS (talk) 23:35, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Note, I don’t expect any opposition, but do let me know if anything about my plans or my code (Template:Current iPadOS/sandbox) seems off to you. — HTGS (talk) 23:36, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Looks good to me (although it needs to be updated to 18.1, released 2024-10-28). Presumably this should be done for other OSes as well. Guy Harris (talk) 21:43, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yep and yep. I plan to think it through, then possibly merge the functionality of all these templates into one (so
{{Current iPadOS|17}}
and{{Current iPadOS|17|short}}
etc) but if this is step 1 and we only implement step 1, I’m still happy. — HTGS (talk) 01:54, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

- Done. Just to reiterate, I really appreciate all our updaters, and I do want to make that task easy where possible, so let me know where that’s possible, or anything that might help. — HTGS (talk) 03:20, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
