States of the German Empire
[edit]I'm going to add the states of the German Empire (many of them red links) to this template, as it will better provide coverage of interesting and relevant subjects on Wikipedia. If you disagree, feel free to mention it at my talk page, here, or on WP:HV pages. - Jarry1250 (t, c) 10:12, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hell no. Dont list them with modern Germany. German Empire includes territories which are today in Poland, Russia and Lithuania. You get the point? Maybe you can make a seperate German Empire template. Phoenix of9 (talk) 14:44, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm sorry but I don't really see how the fact that they are now longer part of Germany is particularly relevant. In my mind, the navigational template should aid navigation between pages of mutual interest to one another. Therefore, the predecessing set of coats of arms (which, as I tried to make clear) were all part of the then German empire. They're definatly German coats of arms, rather than Polish, Russian etc. arms, and hence they would be very useful to people navigating the current set. I did raise this issue as part of wider plans at the Heraldry and Vexillology wikiproject (WP:HV) and received one 'OK' and no complaints. There are enough navboxes which show former members/states/whatever alognside current ones, aas they would be of interest to readers of content about current members/states/whatever. I can't really see what negative effects broadening the navbox could have - I'm sure you have some you'd like me to aware of, in which case I'll reconsider. I'll mention this conversation on the WP. - Jarry1250 (t, c) 15:24, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- I think it entirely appropriate to add the arms of Silesia etc., provided that 'current' and 'former' states are clearly distinguished. It's wrong to confine "German" to meaning "of the FRG as it now exists". Adding the states of the Prussian Empire (is there a more standard way to say "German Empire by which I mean 1871–1918 rather than the HRE"?) would not make the template inconveniently bulky, but I wonder how far back it makes sense to go! —Tamfang (talk) 18:14, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- An unambiguous way to refer to the German Empire of 1871–1918 is "the Second Reich". — Kpalion(talk) 12:45, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
I see that the template has again been trimmed back so that "German" means "of the present FRG", without consensus. —Tamfang (talk) 06:17, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
- I agree. I think, given that the template cannot hope to cover all essences of Germany (I disagree with Jarry on this point), that the best idea would be to move and edit the title of the template to "Coats of arms of the Federal Republic of Germany". That is, at least, accurate. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 14:08, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
