Suggestion
[edit]How about using this template to reference "U. S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation: A Historical Bibliography". United States Coast Guard Historian's Office. ? It is used surprisingly often. Maybe when used with no parameter, or with a specific parameter? --Muhandes (talk) 19:38, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Might be simpler and clearer, both for people using the template and for people reading the markup if we had a new template, perhaps {{cite uscgnavbib}} or something similar. I'm very much in favor of putting oft-cited refs in templates so that we can easily update them when the underlying web site changes. . . 404
[edit]The website referred to has been redone, this template leads to a 404.MrBill3 (talk) 18:35, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- It now points to an archived version, see discussion below. --Muhandes (talk) 13:51, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
Deprecate this template
[edit]Since the page this template links to now returns a 404, and given how frequently the Coast Guard pages disappear, I propose that this template be deprecated, and removed from all pages where it has been placed. - Donald Albury 20:39, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- Some, perhaps all, individual state pages exist hosted at DEFENSE.GOV though they do not appear on that site's site map. They appear to contain multiple unique identifiers within the URLs making template creation difficult at best. For example Maryland, Virginia and Alaska:
- https://media.defense.gov/2018/Jul/09/2001940190/-1/-1/0/LHVA.PDF
- https://media.defense.gov/2018/Jul/09/2001940194/-1/-1/0/LHAK.PDF
- Even the historically fixed information of military organization sites seems to migrate or vanish due to organizational changes so such citation templates are likely transitory at best — defeating the purpose of a template. 71.178.17.34 (talk) 02:24, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose This seems to be against WP:KDL. Some pages are archived, e.g. MA. As pointed out, some pages may exist elsewhere. For now, adding a [dead link] makes sense. If no one else wants to do this, I'll add it to my TDL to recreate this template linking to valid archive pages. --Muhandes (talk) 12:27, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Donald Albury: The template now returns either an archived page or a PDF file (per IP suggestion) for each and every case. --Muhandes (talk) 12:24, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
