Documentation for Medical cases chart template
[edit]For anyone else looking at this chart, note that the documentation for using this template is at Template:Medical_cases_chart/doc - Dyork (talk) 17:39, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Refactoring of the data section of the VT chart to be simpler
[edit]In looking at Template:Medical_cases_chart/doc, it seems there is a MUCH simpler way to put in the data. Currently I have just been copying the entire line of 'Medical cases chart/Row' and filling it in for each day. However, that can be removed to use 'data=' and then simply have the data delimited by semi-colons, as shown in the documentation examples. At some point it would be good to refactor the data to use this simpler format. - Dyork (talk) 17:42, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
- Won't fix After reading the documentation further, I now understand that there are two different ways of using this Medical cases chart template. One way is based on "data" and another on "rows". In looking into it, I think that continuing with the current method is fine. - Dyork (talk) 17:56, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
- Done Changed my mind after the discussion below about not needing to set the 'divisor' with the newer 'data' parameter. This was enough to cause me to want to make the move. - Dyork (talk) 23:35, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
Bars are addition of BOTH deaths and cases, rather than union
[edit]Right now in the chart I'm entering both the number of deaths and the number of positive test results, and the chart is showing the sum of both deaths and positive cases. However, a death is ALSO a positive case. The result is that the chart is currently showing a higher value than is actual. What needs to happen is that we need to calculate the number to enter into the graph as "positive test results - deaths". Then the "deaths + positive cases" will sum to the correct number. Note that for the columns the original numbers still need to be entered. - Dyork (talk) 17:47, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
- Done - Adjusted numbers for bar chart so that deaths are not double-counted. - Dyork (talk) 16:42, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Divisor updated to 2 for the charts
[edit]Note that in order to make the bar charts fit within the "medium" width, which I think looks best on the page, I needed to change the "divisor" to be 2. As far as I understand how the template works, this just shrinks all the bars by 1/2, so that they can fit. From a practical level, this means that each of the lines needs to have a change in it:
> Medical cases chart/Row|2020-04-02|17||321|||338|+10%|16|3|divisor=2|numwidth=dddd
If the cases keep growing, at some point in the future we may need to update the divisor to be higher. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dyork (talk • contribs) 17:54, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
New page for info from Vermont Department of Health
[edit]The VT Dept of Health now has a new page with specific counts: https://www.healthvermont.gov/response/coronavirus-covid-19/current-activity-vermont This seems to be part of the redesign of their Coronavirus / COVID-19 info page. - Dyork (talk) 16:37, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Divisor updated to 3 for the charts
[edit]I have now set divisor=3 in the chart so that it all still fits within the medium size. I would think there has to be an easier way to do this rather than going through and changing ALL the lines, but I haven't been able to figure that out yet. If anyone knows how, it would be great to hear. - Dyork (talk) 15:23, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
- With the newer data parameter formatting the divisor only has to be set once or if you don't set a divisor it auto adjusts by default. Bibzgi (talk) 21:49, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Bibzgi: THANK YOU! I just made the change over to the 'data' parameter and that is fantastic to get away from having to deal with the 'divisor' again. Thank you! - Dyork (talk) 23:32, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- Done - Nothing more to do with this item. The change has now been made. - Dyork (talk) 23:35, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
Corrected data for all cases
[edit]Done - In an effort not to double-count deaths, I was subtracting deaths from the cases when entering data for the bar chart. However, it turns out that the chart template is smarter than that and already calculates the correct values. I went through the data to correct it to have the exact number of cases. There is no need for additional manual calculations before entering the data. - Dyork (talk) 18:53, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
VT Dept of Health now publishing "Total People Recovered"
[edit]As of 6 May 2020, the VT Department of Health started published "Total People Recovered" on their COVID-19 data dashboard. I am starting to include the number of recoveries into the data. - Dyork (talk) 15:23, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
VT Dept of Health changes data to include "probable cases" - chart is now out-of-date
[edit]On Dec 2, 2020, the Vermont Department of Health Daily Update indicated that they are now including "probable" cases in the case counts. This means that the numbers will now be higher than they were before. It also means that the historical data in this chart is no longer exactly accurate, as they have retroactively changed their charts and data sources. At this point, my source for the data will be using the "new" calculations, and so the numbers will be different from the past numbers.
It is possible to download a CSV file from the VT Dept of Health site, so I could reset the entire table going back to March to use these "new" stats. That will be a good bit of work, though. For the moment I'm just using the "new" numbers. - Dyork (talk) 01:32, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
