Template talk:Bad PDF

Not really needed

Pretty much every page in a bad format has now been nominated for IfD by me and one other user (see User:Hut 8.5/Bad formats for what I think is a comprehensive list). I think the BadPDF template was better because it gave some other options that were available for PDFs, such as transwiki or conversion to PNG, that don't really apply to XLS or other formats. What about the other way 'round?

This template says: "The information [this image] contains could be stored more efficiently in the PNG format, the SVG format, or as plain text in an article." What about photographic images that were uploaded as PNG that "could be stored more efficiently" as JPEG (for example, File:Masako Katsura—1954 Buenos Aires.png)? Template:Bad format → Template:Bad image format – This template is only for images, but "FILE" namespace stores more than just images, such as videos and sounds, so, we're missing a template that covers those cases. • Oppose. This is not meant to be an image template. The tag begins with the phrase "This image was uploaded in a non-image format." In other words, this is meant to tag PDF, DOC, and other non-image files that should have been uploaded as images instead. The origins of this template was {{BadPDF}}, which was intended to help prevent people using images that have been saved as PDF before they upload it here to Wikipedia. The new name was the result of people starting to also upload clip art saved as a Microsoft Word DOC file, or charts and graphs saved on a Microsoft Excel XLS file, or an unnecessary video clip consisting of only one constant frame and no sound (whose content should have been better presented as an actual image file), and so forth.   • How would you store a video file as a JPEG or a PNG? Or an audio file? The template is most definitely about static graphical/glyphic information, the only information which can be stored as text, or images. Clearly if an image is stored as a DOC or XLS etc, then it's still an image. The template, as it is worded, cannot be used to indicate a bad sound format, or video format. -- 65.94.79.6 (talk) 00:50, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
    • My last point is that it is possible for someone to create a homemade video file that only displays one single static graphical/glyphic image, and no audio throughout its entire length. That is a waste of file space that could be better presented as one JPEG or PNG. There are ways, for example, to convert MPEG video files to a JPEG or convert JPEGs to an MPEG video files. Just like film is basically a series of still, static images, a video file also consists of a set of static images. So yes, you can store a static image as a video file, and vice versa, just like saving a static image as a DOC or XLS file. Zzyzx11 (talk) 03:17, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
      • File namespace doesn't store just images, it stores other sorts of files, like files for sound, or files for video, so this template still only works with images stored in non-image formats, not with say sound files stored as video-less video formats, etc. So, this is still a "bad image format" template, since as worded, it isn't applicable as a bad sound format file. (or bad video format, if you have a 100 MB animated GIF that could be better stored in a video format) -- 65.94.79.6 (talk) 04:33, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Template:Bad format → Template:Bad PDF – Corresponds to commons:Template:BadPDF.
